Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, engaging and committed individual to work in Newcastle Hospitals trust. This post is designed to suit an individual with an interest in HPB and Transplant Surgery who is looking for a broad experience in HPB, Liver, Kidney and Pancreas transplantation.

The senior trainee will have completed core training and will have passed MRCS, in addition the candidate needs to have experience of HPB surgery at CT or ST level.

You must have full GMC registration at the time of application. This post is to commence June/August 2025 for 12 months.

Main duties of the job

This post is attached to HPB and Transplant surgery based in the Freeman Hospital. The individual will work on the ST3+ tier and as such be expected to perform duties and take clinical responsibility to this level.

The individual will co-ordinate the rota for the nurse practitioners and other junior doctors to ensure coverage during working hours. Delivery of night time cover is co-ordinated through the Hospital @ Night team. We expect the post holder also to gain skills in organ retrieval through attending procedures during their contract period, although this is dependent on other members of the team and experience level.The candidate will make themselves available for theatre and clinical sessions to gain operative and management skills.

Teaching

There is no formal teaching component to this post, but the successful candidate will be expected to deliver informal support to medical students and other junior doctors.

Personal Education

All staff are encouraged to question and learn from the extensive clinical activities that take place on the unit. There are a number of weekly meetings that provide excellent educational opportunities. These include; Directorate Audit/M and M meeting, MDT and departmental meetings including research and audit updates. There is a regional StR teaching programme at which attendance is encouraged.Each fellow will be assigned an Assigned Educational Supervisor (AES) to provide mentorship during the fellowship. Every 6 months the fellow will also meet with the Consultant team at an informal meeting to discuss their progress and provide two way feedback.

Research/Audit

This directorate has a strong research pedigree and many ongoing clinical and scientific research projects. The high volume of specialist activity performed in the unit ensures there is a vast opportunity to instigate and perform research/audit projects. Such activity is encouraged and results presented at regional, national and international meetings.

Clinical

Each doctor is expected to assist in the care of all patients to which he/she is allocated under the direct supervision of the Consultant. In addition he/she is expected to provide cross-cover for all patients in the Unit when required to do so. Duties include business, post-take and teaching ward rounds, OP clinics, Operating Theatre sessions, administrative (dictation of summaries, letters, coding etc.) and presentations (M + M, transplant assessment meetings etc.)

Administration

Each Junior Doctor is expected to carry out all administrative tasks allocated to him/her by the Consultants.

Out-of-Hours Commitment/Pay

The post holders out-of-hours contribution commitment will be to the ST3 HPB rota on approximately 1:7 basis, as well as the daytime ward cover rota. The post is New deal and EWTD compliant.

Emergency and On-Call responsibilities

The doctor accepts that he will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant in consultation where practicable with his colleagues both senior and junior. It has been agreed between the professions and the Department that while juniors accept that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under the sub-section are exceptional and in particular that juniors should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
