An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated individual to join the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre Team as a Business Manager to support the business of the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre.

The Newcastle Surgical Training Centre is a unique state of the art facility based at the Freeman Hospital, providing advanced cadaveric education to the medical profession.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for the management of the NSTC Cadaveric Centre providing National and International Surgical Training for Surgeons and Professions Allied to Medicine. The Unit runs over 200 courses per year covering all surgical disciplines.
  • The post holder will be a member of NSTC Executive Committee and will be expected to manage all technical and administration staff. The Centre is regulated under a satellite Human Tissue Authority (HTA) licence in conjunction with Newcastle University.
  • The post holder is required to present budgets and income and expenditure accounts reporting on financial outcomes.
  • The post holder will ensure effective governance arrangements are in place across the full service including responsibility for standards of practice, policies and procedures ensuring implementation .
  • The post is expected to be self-financing and therefore strong financial management is required.
  • The post holder will ensure the Centre attracts and maximises commercial funding and subscriptions to training, education and research development through effective relationships and marketing of the NSTC.
  • To facilitate the development of ongoing initiatives to assist in Progressive development of the NSTC. Take a lead role in commissioning Industry to develop and foster research projects

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Responsible for the day to day management of the Trusts Newcastle Surgical Cadaveric Training Centre. This includes delivery of proactive, responsive, education and training programmes, regional, national and international based on commercial, Royal Colleges, HENE, Industry and Trust requirements.
  • Leads on development, delivery and evaluation of the NSTC Development Plan to provide a fit for purpose service. Utilises the relevant budgets and income streams effectively
  • Responsible for policy development, planning and performance process.
  • The post holder is responsible for quality assurance, risk management focus on activities which increase the NSTC income capabilities and working with Clinical Directors and other senior colleagues develop.
  • The post holder will implement and monitor a business model for supporting the commercial business arm of the centre, including development and implementation of commercial /business strategies (which future proof the Centre) and build and maintain reputation for excellence.
  • To work closely with Senior Managers and Consultants within the Trust.
  • To ensure effective management and control processes in all aspects relating to service contracts, including negotiation of terms and monitoring arrangement and performance reporting, targets and financial outcomes.
  • To lead on the production and review of the NSTC business plan, education strategy and annual report, including the coordination of any delivery and implementation plans.
  • To lead in project management and development activities in multi specialties within the remit of the Training Unit.
  • To effectively market the NSTC, to promote educational excellence to the Trust and potential commercial industry targeting both the UK and international markets.
  • Negotiating and implementing the commercial aspects of the NSTC and developing a centre of excellence in surgery and other disciplines
  • To lead, as required, in production of tenders and service procurement and healthcare market assessment and analysis.
  • Implement Standards of Practices to ensure compliance with the Human Tissue Authority Regulatory Framework.
  • Identify business opportunities working with internal and external stakeholders for wider marketing and income generation
  • Work with clinical directors on the development of research, marketing, budget management and implementing Standards of Practice.

  • Masters level education or evidence of equivalent study/experience in a related field Excellent standard of literacy and numeracy
  • Extensive IT Skills to include office software packages.
