Job summary

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join the High Consequence Infectious Diseases (HCID) department at the Royal Victoria Infirmary as a Clinical Educator.

  • Be responsible for developing and coordinating HCID activities including:
  • Working with the High Consequence Infectious Disease (HCID) Leads to implement the HCID SOPs
  • Participation in HCID guideline and policy developments, adhering to good governance
  • Embedding education initiatives including simulation-based learning and debriefing
  • Leading and taking continuing responsibility for the in-service HCID development of all relevant staff working within the Adult and Paediatric Critical Care areas (including Emergency Department, Intensive Care and Infectious Diseases ward) environment including maintaining a PPE training schedule
  • Providing leadership and motivation to establish research or evidence- based clinical practices, leading to standard setting and regular audit
  • Monitoring and reviewing clinical and professional standards of care, reporting on performance, and instituting remedial action where necessary
  • Taking an active nursing lead role within the National HCID Network, including centre coordination and attendance at network meetings
  • Provide specialist advice and expertise to support the safe pathway of suspected and confirmed HCID patients across NUTH
  • Contribute to the day-to-day maintenance and further development of a high quality, proactive, responsive service

Main duties of the job

  • Act as a role model to promote and facilitate high standards of clinical practice
  • To act as an advocate for patients within the department, to ensure a patient-orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines
  • To have a visible presence within the clinical setting
  • Provide a leadership role model and demonstrate expert knowledge and high standards of clinical practice
  • Develop the role according to patients changing needs and research findings, within the resources available
  • Maintain accurate records of the clinical service and ensuring that confidentiality of information is adhered to
  • Organise own work and manage own caseload and practice, identifying and maintaining supportive networks for self and other staff members
  • Implement new initiatives where possible to run a cost effective, timely service
  • In conjunction with the other multidisciplinary colleagues, provide monthly reports of case mix, workload, and education activity
  • Organise team meetings at an appropriate frequency, recording and circulating minutes of these. To ensure a good method of communication within the department at all times and to encourage the exchange and implementation of new ideas and evidence-based practice

  • To act as a specialist advisor in all matters relating to HCID to all health care workers in the Trust
  • Ensure documentation is complete and up to date, in line with NMC and Trust guidelines
  • Take responsibility for own personal growth and keep up to date with professional development and research
  • Participate in staff appraisal, staff development and training activities as required
  • Participates in monitoring the quality of care delivered using clinical standards and takes necessary action to ensure excellence in nursing practice. Bases standards upon relevant research where possible

  • To ensure an accurate staff log is retained of completion of HCID training, acceptable to and certifiable by the Trust, and any other data that may reasonably be requested for audit purposes
  • Responsible for the development and co-ordination of a simulation-based training programme for clinical staff. The post holder will be required to play an active role in scenario setting, participation, debriefing, data gathering and analysis
  • Ensure training programmes are followed to ensure staff meet statutory training requirements (fire, resuscitation, health & safety, infection control, manual handling) where they apply to HCID
  • Devise orientation/induction for new staff members and arrange an ongoing programme of training for qualified and unqualified staff and overseas nurses requiring adaptation to the care and management of patients within the HCID environments
