This post will be based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne, but may involve clinics and operating at outreach sites. All routine cataract surgery takes place at the Newcastle Westgate Cataract Centre which is a mile from the RVI.
Main duties of the job
Clinical:
To provide surgical and outpatient ophthalmology services
To contribute to the work of the Emergency Eye Department to a degree dependent on the agreed nature of the job plan
Administrative:
To ensure communication with other healthcare professionals occurs in an effective and timely manner.
To develop an appropriate managerial role to assist with the running of the department.
Research:
This is encouraged.
Teaching:
To contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate ophthalmology teaching programmes.
To contribute to the training of non-medical practitioners and community optometrists

Education & Qualifications
Essential
- Recognised Basic Medical Degree
- Full GMC Registration with Licence to practice
- Fellowship or other evidence of training in ophthalmology
Desirable
- FRCOphth or equivalent
- Experience of working in the NHS.
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Minimum 12 Years medical work experience (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining primary medical qualification of which a minimum of 6 years should have been in a relevant specialty from other grades. Equivalent years experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted
- Fellowship or other evidence of training in paediatric ophthalmology
- Evidence of experience in the specialty.
Desirable
- Evidence of significant experience in high-volume cataract surgery with a low complication rate.

- Experience of supervising junior medical staff.
- Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
