Job summary

The Northern Centre for Cancer Care is one of the country's leading cancer treatment facilities located in a purpose built centre at Freeman Hospital.

The radiotherapy department benefits from state of the art equipment which includes 2 Novalis Truebeam STX linacs with stereotactic capability, 4 Varian TrueBeam linac and 2 Tomotherapy units. TheImaging section comprises 2 Siemens CT scanner with ProSoma virtual simulation and a dedicated MRI scanner. The centre is committed to delivering a high quality service, maintaining the highest specification equipment and contributing to radiotherapy research and development.

Applications are invited for the position of Senior Radiotherapy Assistant within the Radiotherapy service. The post holder will work in support of the radiotherapy team, carrying out clerical and administrative duties, and providing direct and indirect patient care.

The contribution of support staff is recognised and highly valued, and staff are actively supported with their on-going education and development within the limits of their own potential and ambition to ensure service needs are met

Main duties of the job

To support the radiographic teams in the delivery of a high quality, accurate, and patient focussed radiotherapy service. To undertake those duties that underpin the provision of this service in a timely fashion, and at all times respecting the privacy and dignity of the patient.

To provide high-level patient information in the pre-treatment and treatment setting, supporting the radiographers to allow the radiotherapy service delivery to be managed effectively and efficiently.

Job responsibilities

To assist in the provision of a pleasant and efficient service ensuring patients experience a professional level of care and able to emphasise with upset patients and relatives and sometimes, volatile situations.

To provide advice and sometimes complex instructions to patients in a manner where complete understanding is achieved

To ensure patient confidentiality is maintained in accordance with Trust policy.

Assist in the care of patients, attending the department, helping each patient as necessary: such as changing for treatment or examination, and attending to basic hygiene needs.

Prepare the treatment room as appropriate for each individual patient using the data available.

Assist in patient movement and transfer, taking account of local manual handling policies.

Escort patients and their carers to and from other areas of the hospital site

Ensure all patients at the end of the day leave the department safely by liaising with other departments as appropriate.

To treat all patients with courtesy and respect at all times.

Liaise with the Portering and ambulance services or wards and departments as necessary to facilitate the transport or transfer needs of individual patients.

Liaise with and assist as necessary the clerical assistant and other A&C staff to ensure that patient records are made available as required for any given examination or treatment.

Support the maintenance of the patient environment, to the highest standard of care delivery, within trust policies and protocols.

To report any untoward incidents involving patients, staff and colleagues to the senior Radiographer.

Collaborating with other colleagues and health care professionals in the hospital to achieve optimum patient care.

  • Ensure Infection control policies are adhered to when dealing with patients, promoting good practice, in relation to trust policies e.g., hand washing.
