Job summary

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team. The vacancy has arisen within the Department of Vascular Surgery at the Northern Vascular Centre, based at the Freeman Hospital. The post is available for 12 months.

The successful applicant will work a 1 in 8 vascular on call rota. The post would suit experienced registrars who wish to train further in both general & complex sub-specialist Vascular practice, which can be tailored to the individual prior to appointment as a consultant. There are opportunities to perform research and learn advanced open and endovascular techniques in aortic, venous and peripheral work. The Freeman Vascular unit specialises in suprarenal aortic surgery, joint cardiothoracic and vascular aortic work, complex EVAR and aortic dissection, as well as offering advanced, complex lower limb treatments and a regional deep venous service. Applicants should possess full GMC registration with licence to practice at time of application and possession of the Intercollegiate Examination in General or Vascular Surgery is desirable. Salary will be at an appropriate point on the ST3+ payscale. This post is ideal for a post CST fellow who wants to be a future leader in Vascular Surgery.

Main duties of the job

This post is based within the Northern Vascular Centre, Freeman Hospital. The Northern Vascular Centre provides care to patients from Newcastle, Gateshead and Northumberland as well as tertiary level care to patients from across the North East, Cumbria and further afield. The post holder will work on the specialist registrar tier and as such be expected to perform duties and take clinical responsibility to this level. This post will be attractive to post-CST individuals seeking additional specialist training prior to applying for a Consultant position. It would also be attractive to experienced individuals committed to Vascular Surgery as they would value the specialist vascular surgical experience this post offers.

Clinical: Oversee day to day management of patients on the vascular ward including providing supervision of more junior members of the vascular team Attendance at vascular out-patient clinics and operating lists. Participation in weekly MDT and monthly morbidity and mortality meetings On call would be a 1 in 8 non-resident and includes management of emergency vascular admissions to the Freeman as well as providing cover for the Royal Victoria Infirmary where the Major Trauma Centre is located. There is NO commitment to General Surgery

Administrative: The post holder will be responsible for the timely completion of discharge summaries and other general administrative work on behalf of the consultants

Research: The unit has an active research portfolio. There are opportunities for clinical and experimental surgical research for the post holder, both within the Department of Vascular Surgery and Interventional Radiology. Please contact the department to discuss further. There are weekly unit and monthly directorate audit meetings which the post holder is expected to attend.

Teaching: The unit regularly hosts medical students for both basic clinical and final year teaching. Most of this is supervised by Teaching Fellows and whilst there is no fixed commitment, the post holder would be expected to teach medical students, post-graduate students and nurses from time to time.
