Job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic and dynamic individual to oversee both income generation and research activities in the Microbiology Department based at the Freeman Hospital for a 12 month fixed term post. The successful applicant will have an appropriate Master's degree (or equivalent), or Ph.D, and have expertise in diagnostic clinical bacteriology and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

Main duties of the job
The role will require performance and/or supervision of Multiple Combination Bactericidal testing ("synergy testing") and environmental testing for pathogens. You will also be responsible for the development and evaluation of new diagnostic methods for detection of bacterial and fungal pathogens and oversee all research activities within the department related to the diagnosis of bacterial and fungal infections. The successful applicant will be encouraged to develop and lead their own area(s) of research within clinical microbiology and collaborate with other hospital and/or university staff to secure funding to support such projects. Publication of research findings in scientific journals will also be expected.

- To provide scientific supervision and leadership of the laboratory procedures within the Bacteriology Research and Development section of the department and to perform highly specialised test within this field.
- To carry out research and development to advance diagnostic service potential to meet the NHS Long Term Plan.
- To negotiation and deliver income generation testing such as complex antibiotic synergy testing for solid organ transplant recipients, environmental organism identification and sterility checks for safe waste disposal.

- To provide benchwork support in the diagnostic Bacteriology Laboratory, when necessary to cover peer absence
- To give technical advice outside of routine working hours as necessary.
- To work in compliance with local health and safety rules to ensure a safe working environment for you, colleagues and visitors. To adhere to department and Trust Health and Safety policies (including COSHH, Risk assessments and Standard Operating Procedures) and to report any non-compliances to the department Health and Safety officer.
