Job summary
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Nurse with an interest in Interventional Radiology who is looking to expand their role and train to become a Nurse Specialist (Radiology).
Interventional Radiology (IR) uses real time imaging technology (such as x-ray, CT or ultrasound) to look inside patients and perform minimally invasive procedures many of which are life-saving or life-changing and can be divided into 4 main subgroups:
- Vascular Intervention (Arterial) - procedures involving the arteries throughout the body such as angioplasty (balloon dilatation of narrowed blood vessels), embolisation (blocking off blood vessels to tumours or when someone is bleeding internally) and endovascular repairs of aortic aneurysms (EVAR).
- Vascular Intervention (Venous) - procedures involving the veins such as inserting lines into veins, inserting filters to prevent clot travelling around the body (IVC filters) or using devices to remove clot from blocked veins (thrombectomy).
- Non-vascular Intervention - procedures not involving the blood vessels such as unblocking kidneys (nephrostomy) or the liver (PTC) or inserting feeding tubes into the stomach (RIG).
- Interventional Oncology - procedures performed for the diagnosis or treatment of cancer such as tumour ablation (killing tumour cells by inserting a needle into a tumour and heating it up) or injecting chemotherapy coated beads into tumours to kill them (TACE).
Main duties of the job
Nurses and ODPs within IR work closely with the Consultants and Radiographers as part of an MDT to care for patients while they are within the IR department.
The post is ideal for a suitably experienced professional to extend their skills and experience whilst working in a team-based environment.
The Nurse Specialists in Radiology currently provide a very successful and well established female nurse-led Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) service based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. You will also undertake line management duties and deputise in the absence of the Senior Sister on a daily basis.
You will join an experienced and knowledgeable Radiology Nursing team who work across site between the Freeman Hospital and Royal Victoria Infirmary Interventional Radiology Departments.
