Job summary

This post offers an opportunity to rotate between Paediatric Cardiothoracic at the Freeman Hospital and the Great North Children's Hospital. With both rotations, the holder of this post will be part of the well-established pharmacy teams providing a comprehensive and high quality clinical pharmacy services to these regionally and nationally renowned paediatric centres.

The Cardiothoracic Unit provides specialist treatment for all types of cardiac related conditions in children (and adults), including interventional and medical cardiology, cardio surgery, cardiac critical care, transplant and ventricular assist devices (VADs) as well as certain respiratory conditions. The post works with the multi-professional team and will attend ward rounds and paediatric transplant multidisciplinary team meetings.

The Great North Children's Hospital based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, is one of only 14 major Children's Medical Centres in the UK. It is the home of specialities that include paediatric intensive care, gastroenterology, renal medicine, respiratory, rheumatology, endocrinology, surgery, immunology, neurology, oncology and infectious diseases. We are also one of only two specialist units in the UK who treat children with immunodeficiency disease.

Both teams provide a well established pharmacy involved service in the provision of paediatric total parenteral nutrition (TPN) to children on wards for which the post holder will be trained and tasked to take responsibility.

Main duties of the job

Provision of clinical pharmacy service to paediatrics, including cover of paediatric cardiothoracics, the paediatric intensive care units and paediatric wards including involvement in parenteral nutrition.

Liaison with senior staff regarding safe and effective use of medicines, including attendance on consultant-led ward rounds and at multidisciplinary team meetings and service improvement projects.

Training and support of junior staff, in both pharmacy and paediatrics.

Potential for future role developments, including foundation trainee pharmacist tutor, diploma mentor etc.
