Nuclear Medicine Practitioners work in multidisciplinary teams to diagnose and treat disease using radionuclides and radiation in its various forms. These apprenticeships are ideal for people who enjoy basic physics and have a desire to work with patients. During the apprenticeship you will:
- complete an integrated 3 year B.Sc. in Healthcare Science (nuclear medicine) at the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol (three, one week residential periods each year, plus online learning);
- learn from qualified practitioners to deliver all technical aspects within nuclear medicine; and
- contribute to research and development projects.

Main duties of the job
Successful candidates will be expected to perform a range of duties in the Nuclear Medicine clinical department under direct supervision. Work-based training includes:
- Working and communicating with a multidisciplinary team consisting of Consultant Radiologists, Clinical Scientists, Clinical Technologists/Radiographers, Nurse Specialists, and administration staff.
- Patient welfare - training will be delivered on the implementation of local and Trust policies relating to issues such as infection control, IV administration, life support, manual handling of patients etc.
- Safe use of expensive imaging equipment (Gamma cameras, SPECT CT systems) and perform patient investigations.
- Computer processing of commonly acquired studies.
- Performing radioactive administrations to patients.
- Radiation protection including advice to patients.
- Manufacture and release of radiopharmaceuticals in a radiopharmacy.
- Manipulation of patient samples and process results.
- Implementation of local/Trust policy and local standard operating procedures for patient investigations.
