We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our team in the Departments of Endocrinology and Diabetes. Newcastle has high profile endocrinology and diabetes services with national recognition of clinical excellence and nationally and internationally celebrated research programmes. We provide care to people with speciality and tertiary diabetes and endocrinology conditions to a population of around 2.4 million across the North East and Cumbria.
There are currently eleven Consultant Physicians working across our well established diabetes and endocrinology multidisciplinary teams. The service specialises in all aspects of clinical endocrinology including reproductive endocrinology, thyroid disorders, neuroendocrine tumours, thyroid eye disease, endocrine genetic conditions and pituitary disease. Combined endocrinology clinics are held with ophthalmologists (thyroid eye disease), paediatric neuro-oncologists (late effects of childhood cancer therapies), geneticists (monogenic endocrine conditions), neurosurgery/ENT surgeons (pituitary tumours), thyroid surgeons and oncologists (thyroid cancer), hepato-pancreato-biliary surgeons (gastrointestinal and pancreatic NET tumours), adrenal surgeons (paragangliomas and phaeochromocytomas) and paediatric endocrinologists (adolescent endocrine transition).
Main duties of the job
We provide a comprehensive specialist diabetes service including in type 1 diabetes and technology, structured education (we are a DAFNE and DESMOND centre), monogenic diabetes, diabetic foot care, beta cell replacement (islet cell and pancreatic transplantation), type 2 diabetes, cystic fibrosis diabetes and diabetes in pregnancy. Our diabetes multidisciplinary team works with GP practices in the Newcastle area to provide an integrated type 2 diabetes care service. We have an experienced inpatient diabetes specialist nursing team who provide a seven day service across the Trust with consultant support. There are active research interests in immunotherapy, type 1 diabetes and exercise, cystic fibrosis diabetes and beta cell replacement therapy.
