Job summary

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team.

This is a full time appointment. This post contributes to a fully flexible, annualised group job plan.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide anaesthesia for congenital cardiothoracic surgery (including transplantation and mechanical support). In addition, the congenital cardiac anaesthesia group provide services for cardiac cath labs, radiotherapy, ENT and bronchoscopy. There is also responsibility to provide anaesthesia for non-cardiac surgery in patients with congenital cardiac disease. The anaesthesia on call commitment is approximately 1:5 whole-time equivalents with prospective cover.

Within the congenital cardiothoracic work in this post there is a significant commitment to anaesthesia for adults with congenital heart disease and we work closely with our colleagues in the adult cardiothoracic anaesthesia and intensive care departments.

In addition to the challenges of the role, we can offer you a commitment to teaching, education, research and audit.

Candidates for the post must be registered medical practitioners and on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee.

Job responsibilities

Clinical:

This is a full time post which attracts 10 PAs.

You would be working flexibly with your colleagues to cover the requirements of the service. There are currently 5.5 whole time equivalent anaesthetists.

The successful candidate will provide anaesthesia for the full range of congenital cardiothoracic surgery (including mechanical support and transplantation) and perioperative investigation and cath lab intervention.

The anaesthesia group also has commitment to provide anaesthesia for some paediatric ENT, paediatric bronchoscopy and paediatric radiotherapy.

You will be expected to have a flexible working week to allow service provision to be maintained.

Contributing to the clinical governance meeting and audit.

Undertake an annual appraisal and job plan review. It is expected that objectives within job plan reviews will be based on Trust objectives such as fulfilment of fixed contractual commitments on the basis of a 43 week working year with due allowance for statutory holidays.

Administrative:

You will be expected to undertake an appropriate share of administrative duties in conjunction with your colleagues.

There will be adequate provision of secretarial support, office accommodation and computing facilities.

To undertake general administrative duties within a context of compliance with Directorate and Trust aims and objectives.

Research:

The candidate will help facilitate and support research projects going on within the department.

The candidate will be supported in developing their own research profiles either as part of ongoing studies or development of new projects.

Teaching:

You will be expected to participate in the teaching programme for the 2 congenital cardiac fellows and anaesthetic assistants in theatre.
