Job summary
We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated ambitious individual to gain experience in surgery for congenital heart disease. The Freeman Hospital, Newcastle, has been designated by the NHS England to provide Congenital Cardiac Surgery in all ages and for the full spectrum of disease, including transplantation and mechanical assist devices. The centre is also one of six in the UK recognised for the provision of paediatric cardiac and respiratory ECMO services and one of the two centres providing paediatric cardiopulmonary transplantation along with paediatric mechanical assist as bridge for transplantation. In addition, the department provides a national service for heart transplantation for adult congenital patients. A modern state of the art Institute of Transplantation has been built and will cater for all forms of organ transplantation.
The appointee will join a department of three surgeons and eight cardiologists providing surgical care for paediatric and adult patients with congenital heart disease and will be expected to undertake all forms of paediatric and adult congenital cardiothoracic surgery. It is expected that the appointee will contribute to training and audit in the department and excellent facilities for research are available in the University.
