The Upper GI team are part of the general surgeons based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. The Northern Oesophagoagstric Unit is one of the busiest Upper GI cancer resection units in the country. You will join a team of four other surgeons providing care for oesophagoagstric patients, complex benign Upper GI problems and the breadth of general surgery.
Additionally, the department is moving towards a split on call with both an upper and lower GI consultant. This will be on 1:8 rotational basis for days and 1:16 nights.
You must be able to work effectively and efficiently with a team, managing patients with emergency presentations and integrate into a sub-specialty team.

Main duties of the job
You will provide an expert opinion, investigate and manage those patients presenting to the Department of Upper GI Surgery in Newcastle. Primarily you will be contributing to the management, delivery and development of the Upper GI service. You will have responsibility for patient care within this department with a contribution to the management of those with both benign and malignant Upper GI disorders.
Management of these problems will involve appropriate modern surgical techniques and close team working involving radiologists, gastroenterologists, pathologists, and oncologists to ensure the best outcomes possible for the people of the North East of England and beyond referred for an Upper GI opinion. You will take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a secondary and tertiary centre. You will be expected to attend and actively contribute to the weekly multi-disciplinary team meetings.
