Job summary
Applications are invited for a permanent Higher Specialist Practitioner (Band 6) post in the Newcastle Genetics Laboratories. The successful candidate will be a motivated and reliable individual and a strong team worker, with significant postgraduate laboratory experience, looking to join a team of around 90 Scientific and Technical staff. A knowledge of genomics is essential, ideally in both rare disease and cancer genetics, alongside excellent analytical, communication and supervisory skills.
Newcastle Genetics Laboratory provides testing for a wide variety of inherited and acquired conditions for a local population of over three million people and in addition provides specialised services to patients throughout the UK and internationally. The laboratory is housed in purpose built accommodation at the Institute of Genetic Medicine close to Newcastle city centre, and has a close association with various high profile academic groups working in Newcastle University.

Main duties of the job
The Newcastle Genetics laboratory forms part of the North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory Hub. This collaboration between laboratories in Leeds, Sheffield and Newcastle provides Genomic services across Yorkshire, Humber and the North. The combined size of our geography makes this the largest collaboration in the country with the Trusts offering a range of both general and specialist hospital services with excellent clinical outcomes for patients. We have an international reputation for excellence in specialist care, research and academic training.
The successful applicant will primarily help to deliver analytical and reporting activity for a defined range of disorders, supporting service provision in key areas for the Newcastle Genetics Laboratory as part of the North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory Hub.
In addition, the successful applicant will work closely with scientific and technical staff to help to ensure adequate analytical and technical cover in other areas of the laboratory.
