Job summary

This temporary post to cover Maternity leave is a fantastic opportunity for an existing Band 7 or experienced Band 6 Midwife to develop their senior leadership skills within the Urgent Maternity Assessment Unit as part of our tertiary referral Maternity Services at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals. You will lead on the management and development of a clinical team in delivering the Birmingham Symptom Specific Obstetric Triage System, ensuring the provision of high standards of care to women. The Urgent Maternity Assessment Unit is a pivotal aspect of our Acute Maternity services where early identification of the critically ill or deteriorating woman is key in reducing morbidity and mortality.

You will work closely with a team of Band 7 Managers across the service, as well as a core team of Band 6 Midwives.

You will support the Matron in ensuring that services meet the agreed targets within the resources available, ensuring high standards of excellent, compassionate, and quality care is delivered to women and their families. You will maintain a visible professional presence where staff and patients can turn for senior assistance, advice and support.

This role is ideal for someone wishing to strengthen their personal and professional knowledge, skills and attributes, and is looking for a new leadership challenge.

Main duties of the job

Main duties:

  • Oversight and management of the Urgent Maternity Assessment Unit.
  • Writing and ongoing monitoring/management of staffing rotas to ensure safe staffing of midwives and health care assistants.
  • Visible service lead.
  • Clinical midwifery support with the delivery of the Birmingham Symptom Specific Obstetric triage system.
  • Support and guidance for Midwifery and support staff within the Department.
  • To work closely with Consultant Obstetricians/Midwife, Specialist Midwives and Allied Health professional teams.
  • Involvement in the investigation and shared learning from clinical incidents and patient feedback including complaints.
