Job summary
Exciting opportunities have arisen for dynamic, engaging and committed a newly created Clinical Research Fellow to work in specific roles to deliver cutting edge experimental medicine studies, early phase clinical trials and advanced therapies (e.g. gene therapy, cell-based therapy).
The fixed-term one-year post would suit trainees who have a special interest in clinical and translational research and those who want to gain clinical research experience before decision on pursuing an academic career. The post holder will have the opportunity to study for the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Research. Ideally applicants will have completed Foundation Training and / or Core Training. The post will provide a solid basis from which to apply for either an Academic Clinical Fellow (ACF), IMT or ST post.
The posts are available from August and you must have full GMC registration with a license to practice.
The individual will be expected to perform duties and take clinical responsibility to ST1-2 or ST3+ level depending on post appointed to. The duties of the post holder include supporting the delivery of experimental medicine studies and clinical trials conducted at the NIHR Newcastle Clinical Research Facility.
Main duties of the job
The fellow will be expected to serve as sub-investigator for research studies/clinical trials under the supervision of the respective principal investigator. The specific duties the fellow will be involved depends on individual trials but usually it will involve taking informed consent, assessment against eligibility criteria, assessment of disease activity and severity, assessment and reporting of adverse events, supervision of administration of the investigational medicinal product (IMP) and provide medical emergency cover for research participants attending the facility. It is expected that the fellow will be supporting several trials concurrently. Training will be provided by the study sponsor for all clinical trials, and the fellow is also expected to attend additional regular training sessions on generic clinical and research skills provided by the unit.
The NCRF runs trials spanning a variety of clinical areas/specialties but key areas of research include Neuromuscular Disease, Rheumatology, Mitochondrial Disease, Liver Disease, Neurodegenerative disease, Rare Diseases, Dermatology and Respiratory Disease. The fellow will have opportunities to be involved in additional clinical research projects, audits and quality improvement projects. There are also clinical opportunities which are dependent on the responsibility requirement at the NCRF. There may be occasional out-of-hour commitments as some trials involve prolonged or even overnight scheduled study visits.

- Primary Medical Qualification.
- Full GMC registration or eligibility to obtain this within 3 months (or within 6 months for non-EEA applicants).
- Satisfactory completion of Foundation Training (or equivalent).

- Up-to-date training in Good Clinical Practice.
