Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sister/Charge Nurse with Oncology/Haematology experience to join Ward 36 Day Unit within the Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC).

Ward 36 provides treatment for patients who require systemic anti-cancer treatment (SACT) for haematological and oncological malignancies. As the regional centre we take patients from both the Northeast and Cumbria regions for specialist complex chemotherapy regimens which may not be available to them locally. We also provide a satellite clinic at Cramlington, which there is an expectation for all staff to travel to on a regular basis and as a Sister/Charge Nurse would be expected to work autonomously as the nurse in charge of this unit on a regular basis.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a forward thinking, dynamic nurse who is keen to develop their leadership and management skills and has a passion for service improvement. As a junior sister it is essential you hold a recognised qualification in SACT administration and have completed the Practice Assessor accreditation as teaching and supporting junior staff and students is an essential part of the role. You will also need to be highly motivated and able to demonstrate excellent clinical and interpersonal skills.

Our working hours are currently 08:00-19:00 7 days a week, therefore the successful candidate would be expected to work as part of a shift pattern that encompasses 7 day working with regular nurse in charge responsibilities.

Essential Criteria:

  • UKONS SACT Competence
  • Practice Assessor
  • Significant experience within Oncology/Haematology including in depth knowledge of SACT regimes
  • Clinical skills - including venepuncture, cannulation, IV drug administration and CVC management

Desirable Criteria:

  • Previous band 6 experience/or regular nurse in charge experience
  • Service improvement/change management project experience

  • In areas within the organisation Nurses / ODPs may be banded at 6 by virtue clinical reasons, for example, critical care.
  • Provide effective support and leadership to staff, patients and carers within the Theatre or Department.
  • Act as role model, teacher and supervisor for junior staff and students.
  • Ensure systems are in place to provide the continuity of safe effective care for patients at all times.
  • Effective member of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • May be required to participate in an On-call rota as required.
