The North East and Yorkshire Genomic Medicine Service Alliance (NEY GMSA) is one of seven alliances across England. An Alliance of NHS Provider Trusts in Sheffield, Leeds and Newcastle upon Tyne, its primary aim is to embed genomic medicine into routine care to improve the lives of patients with rare conditions and cancer

Genomics is amongst the fastest growing sectors in science and health and is already delivering transformational healthcare across the country. Our exciting programme is making genetic testing available to mainstream clinicians and offering revolutionary new diagnostics for our patients and their families.

We are currently delivering a shared GLH Laboratory Information System (G-LIMS) to transform the systems used for genomic analysis. The GLH informatics vision is to enable a single virtual laboratory that covers the whole region. Scientists will have access to the tools and data required to perform their jobs, regardless of their physical location.

You will be an enthusiastic individual, able to form relationships easily and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

You'll be familiar with business change management techniques.

Main duties of the job

This role will work in our core project team alongside our project managers and subject matter experts from the laboratories, informatics and IT teams. The G-LIMS project runs across the laboratories in Newcastle, Leeds and Sheffield and we make extensive use of Microsoft Teams for day-day communications. Some travel may be required, but our 3-city structure also offers flexibility for your base location.

Key skills and abilities include:

  • Determining the readiness of the Labs to accept the change and knowing what needs to be in place to enable this such as signed-off clinical safety and information governance protocols
  • Understanding how the new system impacts on the current roles of our Lab colleagues and whether it changes how they do something
  • Identifying any training which might be required because of the above
  • Being able to articulate the reasons for the new system and its benefits
  • Having a high focus on customer service and user requirements
  • Capability to enthuse and take others with you
  • Identifying the communication needs required to keep our Lab colleagues and other stakeholders informed
  • Devising and running a regular communication strategy throughout the life of the project including newsletters, events etc
  • Regular visits to the Labs to assess engagement and readiness first hand

Job responsibilities

  • Direct and effective management of projects as required within time, cost and quality parameters.
  • Contribute towards the delivery of the GLH Programme/Project portfolio and coordinate project inter-dependencies.
  • To make a significant contribution to the aspects of the GLH strategy, which enables the Trust to meet its business goals and to achieve statutory and business reporting requirements.
  • To ensure the timely and accurate production of programme status reports for senior management.
  • Development and delivery of a comprehensive portfolio of work comprising of programmes, projects, technical requests and feasibility studies.
  • Client interaction, including developing a pipeline of work from the client, managing programmes/project priorities with the client, financial tracking and reporting, and project tracking and reporting.
  • Cross-activity relationship management.
  • The position will involve a considerable amount of interaction with colleagues, business groups, IT and external vendors.
  • To make a considerable contribution to the ongoing development of the GLH IT Change Framework (structure, processes and controls).
  • Promoting the value of the Change Framework within the change community, and driving improvements based on experience gathered from business partners. Maturing those disciplines across the organisation ensuring deliverance of a professional, high quality service.
  • Contributing and developing the GLH Programme Management Operating Plan, maintaining alignment to NHS direction and policy.
  • Managing effective interfaces in order to maintain an end-to-end view of programme priorities and direction.
  • Feeds into and updates a register of portfolio risks and issues, including mitigation plans. Ensuring that these are escalated and acted upon effectively.
  • Experience of managing stakeholders and debate, up to Director level.
