The successful applicant would be expected to support delivery of our colorectal service. There are potential mentorship and training opportunities for new consultants and considerable flexibility within the department to support the appointment of the candidate.

The Colorectal Unit in Newcastle is delivered across 2 sites with 7 Colorectal Surgeons at the RVI and 3 at the Freeman. The advertised post is primarily based at the RVI which delivers specialist elective colorectal surgical care and provides the Emergency General Surgery (EGS) service and the Newcastle Major Trauma Centre (MTC). The Colorectal Unit provides secondary care for the people of Newcastle and tertiary services in advanced/recurrent CRC, anal cancer, Intestinal Failure /complex Inflammatory Bowel Disease surgery, as well as an established pelvic floor service. The regional anal cancer and pelvic floor MDTs are hosted at the RVI and there is a well-established laparoscopic and robotic colorectal surgical programme with additional major expansion of the robotic colorectal service infrastructure service expected imminently.

Main duties of the job

The candidates will be expected to participate in a split on call system of upper and lower gastrointestinal surgeons providing 1:8 on call. The rota includes a commitment to cover the Major Trauma Centre at the RVI and in-house support/mentorship/further training in trauma care is also readily available as required.

The candidate should have a dedicated special interest to develop and progress current departmental needs including advanced/recurrent Colorectal and Anal Cancer, complex Abdominal wall hernias and Pelvic Floor.
