Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Home Parenteral Nutrition and Intestinal Failure Nursing Team. This post is based at Freeman Hospital but may involve cross site working at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and some community work.

We are a designated centre for the management of patients with Type 2 and Type 3 intestinal failure, you will be joining a highly skilled MDT team comprising of Consultant Gastroenterologists, IF surgeons, Specialist HPN and IF Dietitians, Specialist Pharmacist, Clinical Psychologist, and specialist HPN and IF nursing team.

This post will rotate between caring for Type 2 IF inpatients mainly on the surgical wards and training Type 3 IF patients or their families in the administration of parenteral nutrition for home. You will work alongside the MDT team reviewing patients weekly in the HPN and IF clinics, Nurse led Line Clinic, attending the Satellite HPN clinic at James Cook Hospital and reviewing patients in their home.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop their clinical skills primarily in the long-term management and care of central venous catheters; stoma and fistula care; teaching skills and there will be opportunities to be involved in audit work.

Main duties of the job

  • The HPN & IF Service in Newcastle provides inpatient training for patients requiring home parenteral nutrition. The main role of the HPN nurse specialist is to train the patient or family member to safely administer the parenteral nutrition via a centrally placed catheter so they can be established on Home Parenteral Nutrition. The nursing team work closely with the HPN Home Care Companies to organize discharge date and delivery of the ancillaries and PN.
  • One of the greatest risks to patients on HPN is a catheter related blood stream infection so a fundamental part of this post preventing infection by teaching central line care to the highest possible standard following Trust procedures and guidelines.
  • The main duties of the rotational post looking after our Type 2 IF inpatients are attending ward rounds, presenting patients at the nutrition MDT, and supporting the wards caring for these complex patients. The post holder will work alongside the IF surgeons in the planning of IF surgical cases and liaising with regional referrers organizing the safe transfer of Type 2 IF patients into the Trust. There will be opportunities to develop clinical skills in distal feeding and Chyme reinfusion.
  • Full training and support will be provided by our specialist nurses and the wider MDT.
