Job summary

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for two highly motivated, ambitious individuals to join our well integrated team.

The Newcastle Hospitals Department of Dermatology is one of the largest in the UK, with a reputation for excellence in training, research and clinical practice. The team comprises 20 Consultants, 14 Specialist Registrars, 15 Specialty Doctors, 2 post CCT Fellows in Mohs surgery and a CESR Fellow. This strong cohort of doctors in training means that teamwork, training and educational activities form a strong departmental focus. There has also been an emphasis on developing Nursing roles in recent years and the team now includes multiple medical and Surgical Nurse Specialists at Bands 6 and 7, with established training programmes and pathways for progression.

Main duties of the job

Applications are invited for two Physician Associate posts in Dermatology based in the Department of Dermatology at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

The post holders must have completed a full programme of PA training, with evidence of full certification, and ideally would have some experience of working in a general medical setting. They would be expected to have excellent communication skills and the ability to take a history and formulate and carry out a treatment plan with appropriate support and supervision. Training in general dermatology would be provided, and participation in weekly educational and governance activities would be essential.

Job responsibilities

  • The post holder will be provided general training in dermatology and are envisaged to have a split role, with 50% Medical and 50% Surgical Dermatology. This will include training in fields such as skin cancer diagnosis and minor surgery, and the management of chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and acne, as well as drug monitoring and referral triage. Depending on how the roles and post holders develop, there may be potential with time sub-specialise more in one of these areas.
  • The post holder will work collaboratively
  • The post holder will build on their skills in clerking, assessing and examining patients gained through their physician associate training, present to more senior members of the team, initiate and interpret investigations, and recommend appropriate managements/treatments (as governed by national guidelines) . They will be expected to liaise with other professionals and specialities as required and complete necessary documentation relating to their patients.
  • It is expected that the Physician Associate will become involved in the activities of the Department, including coordinating patients on treatment pathways, reviewing inpatients and providing subsequent management of cases in conjunction with the Clinical team. Physician Associates may represent the department at local meetings as appropriate.
  • Physicians Associates will be expected to contribute to the units educational activities and instruct and educate patients in preventative healthcare.
  • Fully document all aspects of patient care and complete all required paperwork for legal and administrative purposes.
