Job summary

Significant investment within the area of children's community Occupational Therapy, has resulted in the creation of two new 5/6 development posts. This unique opportunity will allow those with a particular interest in paediatrics, to develop skills and experience whilst working towards a Band 6 position.

This newly established post will support children and their families, across Newcastle referred to Occupational Therapy for variety of functional issues, including children with sensory processing differences.

The successful candidates will be required to develop their own personal learning portfolio over a minimum of an 18 month period, before progressing to a Band 6, upon which time they will have the opportunity to be part of the wider Band 6 rotation, across acute and community services.

The service works in a locality model and across a range of settings including school home and within a clinic environment.

Applicants will join the existing Children's Occupational Therapy team based at the Regent Point in Gosforth, and will become part of a dynamic and innovative team whose developments are shared with other specialist teams nationally.

Experience of working in children's Occupational Therapy is preferred, although support and training will be available.

Main duties of the job

The newly appointed Band 5/6 development posts are newly established posts to carry out, assessment and intervention for a child experiencing functional issues which impact upon their Occupational Performance.

Applicants should have an understanding of Occupational Therapy process with children with a range of conditions including children with sensory processing differences.

As well as carrying out assessments within clinic and home, the successful candidate will be responsible for supporting a named school one day a week during term time.

  • Band 5 rotational posts are designed to consolidate and build on graduate skills and academic knowledge, giving the newly qualified occupational therapist a broad practical experience of a range of patients and conditions and areas of work.

Band 6

  • To provide a high standard of occupational therapy care to complex and highly complex patients within specialist area evidencing high level problem solving, reasoning skills and independence of judgement.
  • To provide day to day supervision of junior and support staff and students working in the specialist area.
  • The specialist practitioner is the clinical lead for the Occupational Therapy Service within the area of practice providing highly specialist knowledge within the Trust and externally to therapists and other health care professionals from secondary and primary care.
