Job summary

The Newcastle Breast Screening Service currently provides breast cancer screening by mammography once every 3 years for a catchment population of approximately 150,000 women between the ages of 50 and 70 who are resident in Northumberland, Newcastle, North Tyneside and Derwentside. The service is part of the National Breast Screening Programme, which utilises a complex, computerised call/recall system operated in conjunction with systems situated in the relevant PCTs, Care Trusts, and Tyne and Wear Contractor Services Agency. The service utilises 3 mobile screening units covering 18 sites throughout the catchment area, and one static unit. Further assessment of screen detected abnormalities is performed in the Breast Assessment Clinic in the New Victoria Wing, R.V.I.Approximately 1000 invitations for screening and 50 for assessment are sent out each week. Each woman who attends receives a result letter, and her G.P. receives a report on the outcome of screening.

Main duties of the job

To be able to communicate effectively with other members of the multi-disciplinary team. Clients of the service, carers and relatives. GPs and other health care professionals staff from other Screening Offices. Attempt to solve problems quickly and in a professional manner. Acquire the necessary information to answer complex queries from both clients and other health care professionals regarding the National Breast Screening Programme, and the mobile screening unit schedules. Prepare clinics for 3 mobiles, the static unit and the Assessment Clinic to ensure that Departmental deadlines are met. Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively in conjunction with other team members. High standard of keyboard skills together with a high degree of accuracy. Willing to train in non-clinical lifting and handling for the moving of heavy film packets and boxes of stationery and leaflets, which may require the use of trolleys.

  • To contribute to the effective operation of the call/recall National Breast Screening Programme as part of the multi-disciplinary team by utilising team leader skills to ensure provision of an excellent clerical service within the Newcastle Breast Screening service. This will involve leading a team of junior A&C staff; undertaking a varied range of duties consistent with ensuring accurate recording of complex clinical information on NBSS, and to provide an efficient receptionservice.
  • To answer queries from clients/patients, relatives, GPs, and PCTs and other Screening Offices.
  • To provide clerical support for the breast imaging symptomatic service using the Radiology Information System (RIS)
