Job summary
Under the strategic direction of the Waste Manager the Assistant Waste Manager will take a lead role in the implementation of operational waste management activities across the Trust, assisting in the development and implementation of projects and system improvements and working closely with functional leads and specialist advisors to support the Waste Hierarchy improvements of the Trust's estate in keeping with our ambitious Climate Emergency Strategy targets.

Main duties of the job
To monitor and audit waste generating activities, assisting in ensuring compliance. To investigate, develop and promote opportunities to reduce waste volumes and improve Waste Hierarchy outcomes. To develop procedures for sharing best practice and to play a significant role in educating, engaging and empowering staff to implement waste reduction and Waste Hierarchy improvement measures.

Job responsibilities
- Working as part of the Sustainability Team, help to drive a programme of continuous improvement, innovatively reducing our contribution to the climate emergency and impact on the environment whilst simultaneously making our healthcare services more sustainable for future generations.
- Under the strategic direction of the Waste Manager, take a lead role in the implementation of operational waste management activities across the Trust, assisting in the development and implementation of projects and system improvements and working closely with functional leads and specialist advisors to support the Waste Hierarchy improvements of the Trusts estate.
- Regularly monitor, analyse and report waste volumes, costs and carbon data utilising waste monitoring and auditing tools and best practice protocols.
- Provide waste generation, cost and carbon footprint information for the completion of the Estates Returns Information Collection (ERIC), Premises Assurance Model (PAM) and other mandatory reporting as required.
- Assist with the preparation of associated budgets, forecasts and contribute to regular updates and reports to senior management on waste performance.
- Be a key contributor to the Trust Waste Management Group, the multi-disciplinary Trust Sustainable Healthcare Committee and sub-groups and represent the Trust in a range of internal and external meetings and forums.
- Develop and promote procedures for waste management best practice working with site based Estates teams, and all staff, to explain, raise awareness and ensure correct procedures are followed.
- Audit waste consumption activities, down to ward/department level throughout the Trust. Produce reports recommending actions for improvement, advising on the resources required to implement recommendations, supporting invest to save project proposals/business cases.
- Assist the Trust and partners to ensure compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice and Trust procedures and to provide technical expertise relating to waste management.
- Maintain effective communication and good systems of working with a wide range of colleagues within Estates, other support and clinical directorates, regional partners and peers, and patients and visitors.
- Undertake additional training in order to further develop and extend specialised skills and knowledge in the sustainability field of waste management to help the Trust maintain its position as a sustainability leader within the NHS and beyond.

- Post-graduate qualification, or formal training, in a subject relevant to the post
