Job summary

Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit enthusiastic, motivated individuals who want a future career as a Pharmacy Dispensing Assistant.

We are a busy pharmacy department offering a diverse and complex range of functions and activities including; Dispensary, ward based and clinical activities, logistics, stores and procurement, clinical trials, aseptic preparation and medicines information. We have an automated robotic dispensing and stock supply system.

We are looking for positive individuals who can contribute to the efficiency of our in-patient service with good communication skills, attention to detail and a willingness to learn. Applying candidates need to have the ability to work well with other member of the pharmacy team, be flexible to change and have confidence to effectively liaise with other health care professionals in a hospital setting.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will undertake an apprenticeship that will provide them with all of the necessary skills and knowledge to complete a Level 2 qualification in Pharmacy Services.

The apprenticeship involves on the job training in all aspects of the role of a Pharmacy Dispensing Assistant - dispensing of prescription, issuing of ward and controlled drug orders, filling of compliance aids along with stock control activities.

This position would suit an individual who seeking new challenges in an innovative environment and those who are keen to develop their knowledge and skills in the dispensaryof a large acute trust.

As key members of the Pharmacy Team you will work alongside Pharmacists, Technicians, Assistants and Students supporting the rapid discharge of our patients 7 days a week and participate in weekend working, weekday late duties and bank holidays on a rotational basis.

  • Undertake reception duties at the staff hatch, answer the dispensary telephone and ensure orders/prescriptions are entered on the prescription tracking system
  • Provide appropriate support as required to dispensary staff
  • Checks off orders received into the dispensary in accordance with procedure
  • Replenish the Emergency Drug Cupboard
  • Replenish a variety of cardiac arrest boxes
  • Issues Controlled Drugs in response to a written order
  • Undertake in-house training programme for the dispensing of discharge prescriptions
