Job summary

This is a general neurology post with a special interest in Sleep Disorders. Prospective candidates will be encouraged to develop their own area of interest within Sleep Disorders to strengthen our existing team and expand the service as well as working within the general neurology service including acute liaison, out-of hours on call, attending weeks on the ward, advice and guidance, and outpatient clinics.

We are happy to consider interested individuals who do not yet have a sleep interest but would be prepared to train in this area. If successful to the job, we have available funding and would be happy to discuss how the necessary experience could be gained locally or nationally.

Main duties of the job

This post is based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in the regional neurosciences centre with weekly clinics on the Freeman site. You will provide a general neurology service, comprising acute and elective outpatient and inpatient work, and will take part in the provision of a specialist service in Sleep Disorders. Future service developments may include provision of acute services to a DGH in the region.

The appointee will be expected to participate in the weekly academic meetings and in the departmental teaching programme for the undergraduate medical students from Newcastle University. They will also be expected to contribute to the postgraduate training.

The appointee will be expected to undertake administrative duties in relation to the care of his/her patients and in relation to the running of the Department of Neurology in co-operation with the Head of Department, Departmental Manager and Clinical Director.

Essential

  • Primary Medical Qualification.
  • Full GMC Registration.
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register (within 6 months from the date of the AAC).
  • Willingness to develop an interest in sleep medicine

Desirable

  • MD, PhD or equivalent, ideally with a focus on sleep or related area
  • Evidence of subspecialty training in Sleep Disorder.

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of experience in the specialty.
  • Evidence of a substantial commitment to the specialty.
  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion within the speciality.
