Job summary

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join the Department of Neuroradiology based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle City Centre. There are 14 Consultant Neuroradiologists working within the Department which forms part of the Directorate of Neurosciences which houses Neurology, Neurosurgery and Neurophysiology and the highly specialised national mitochondrial service, providing a comprehensive, specialist service to a population of approximately 2.4 million across the North East and Cumbria.

The appointee will join the interventional neuroradiology service in Newcastle which has national and international reputation for being originator or major contributor to neuro-interventional trials e.g. ISAT, TOPSAT, PISTE, etc currently with a current team of four experienced and motivated interventional neuroradiologists and an academic professor. The Trust has a fully approved and resourced plan for delivery of mechanical thrombectomy which will be rolled out in a phased manner in line with recruitment over the next 1-2 years, ultimately aiming to offer a 24-hour service. Through the highly regarded Boston Scientific neuro-interventional fellowship, the department has trained a number of eminent interventional neuroradiologists in the country, and the new appointee will have the opportunity to contribute to the department's training programme.

Main duties of the job

The department provides a Diagnostic Neuroradiology and Spinal Intervention service to the clinicians within the Trust. It also supports many Regional Services such as the Stereotactic Radiosurgery Service based at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care. We are core members of 12 MDTs such covering Stroke, Vascular, Adult & Paediatric Neuro-oncology, Paediatric neurology, Neuro-ophthalmology, Pituitary among others.

We have a large spinal intervention service with theatre lists 5 days a week. We deliver image guided disc biopsies, verebroplasty, glue injections to treat spinal CSF leaks, CT myelograms, nerve root injections etc. Clinical Neurosciences in Newcastle is an integrated directorate with excellent surgical and medical facilities and strong links between the departments.

Essential

  • MBBS or other recognised equivalent medical qualification.
  • FRCR or a Postgraduate qualification of similar seniority.
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register, (or for UK trainees entry expected within 6 months from the date of the AAC).

Desirable

  • MD, PhD or equivalent in relevant area

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • At least 6 years' training in clinical radiology including two years' training in interventional neuroradiology.
  • Ability to offer an expert neuroradiology opinion.

Desirable

  • Experience of a specialist fellowship in interventional neuroradiology.
  • Experience in mechanical thrombectomy techniques

Management and Administration Experience
