Job summary

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our team in the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes in this newly created post. Newcastle has a high profile endocrinology and diabetes service with national recognition of clinical excellence and a nationally and internationally celebrated research programme. We provide care to people with speciality and tertiary diabetes and endocrinology conditions to a population of around 2.4 million across the North East and Cumbria.

There are 11 Consultant Physicians working across our well established diabetes and endocrinology multidisciplinary teams. The service specialises in all aspects of clinical endocrinology including thyroid cancer, neuroendocrine tumours, thyroid eye disease, endocrine genetic conditions and pituitary disease. Combined endocrinology clinics are held with ophthalmologists (thyroid eye disease), paediatric neuro-oncologists (late effects of childhood cancer therapies), geneticists (monogenic endocrine conditions), neurosurgery/ENT surgeons (pituitary tumours), thyroid surgeons and oncologists (thyroid cancer), hepato-pancreato-biliary surgeons (gastrointestinal and pancreatic NET tumours), adrenal surgeons (paragangliomas and phaeochromocytomas) and paediatric endocrinologists (adolescent endocrine transition).

Main duties of the job

Clinical:

  • Provide specialist and tertiary endocrinology and diabetes care within outpatient clinics, MDT meetings and on consultation with other departments within the organisation and wider region
  • Provide general internal medical care with other consultants within the department
  • To input into the out of hours acute medicine service

Administrative:

  • To participate in audit and clinical governance activity related to endocrinology and diabetes care in line with local and national guidance and requirements.
  • To participate constructively in departmental meetings.
  • To participate in continuing professional development, appraisal and risk management

Research:

  • Diabetes and Endocrinology are areas of research and academic excellence in Newcastle, with leadership from clinical academics of high national and international standing. The post holder will be encouraged to participate in clinical research activity and develop projects where practicabl

Teaching:

  • The post holder will be involved in undergraduate teaching within the outpatient clinic setting
  • There will be opportunities to develop interests within simulation medical training
  • There will be opportunities to offer student selected modules in diabetes and endocrinology to undergraduates
  • To aid with education and training of medical and allied health professional colleagues in primary care.
