Our MSc Internship is a role with our staff bank, specifically designed to offer paid Healthcare Support Worker experience for those wishing to enter on to the self-funded MSc Nursing Science Programme (pre-registration) in January 2024 at Northumbria University. This vacancy is for applicants that already meet the academic entry requirements but require 500 hours of healthcare experience to be able to apply for the Nursing Science Registered Nurse MSc in either Adult, Child, Mental Health or Learning Disability Nursing. Main duties of the job

This role provides paid Healthcare Support Worker experience to support the 500 hours required to meet the Recognised Prior Learning element (RPL) of the self-funded 2 year MSc Nursing Science (pre-registration) programme at Northumbria University.

As a Healthcare Support Worker you will assist the registered nurses (or other healthcare practitioners) in providing high quality patient care, maintaining patients' privacy and dignity at all times and provide care in a compassionate and sensitive manner. You will work effectively as part of the multi-disciplinary team contributing to the departmental objectives. You will be expected to contribute to housekeeping and other ward / department duties as required, e.g., general tidiness, re-determined stock levels are met and clinical equipment is clean, working and stored correctly and to assist with admin & clerical duties as required.

You will in time develop an awareness of normal parameters concerning patient / client wellbeing and report that which is out with normal parameters to the registered professional. You will plan and prioritise your own and delegated work tasks and activities, carrying out routine elements of assessment to enhance the patient / client journey, following an initial assessment by a registered practitioner and meeting basic care needs of patients e.g., washing, dressing, assistance with feeding etc.

Job responsibilities

Candidates will be jointly interviewed by Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals and Northumbria University to assess suitability for both the Healthcare Support Worker role and the pre-registration nursing programme. Successful applicants will be offered a zero hour contract on our staff bank for a Band 3 Healthcare Support Worker role. You will have the flexibility to choose your shifts across a wide range of services and departments at Newcastle Hospitals to gain the required 500 hours of care experience. Upon successful completion of the 500 hours by January 2024 you will then start the self-funded full time Nursing Science Registered Nurse MSc programme in your chosen field of Nursing. You can continue to work on the staff bank as a Healthcare Support Worker whilst completing the MSc programme if required.

  • This post provides the post holder with a fixed term period of Healthcare Assistant experience to support the 500 hours required to meet the Recognised Prior learning element (RPL) to enter on to the 2-year accelerated MSc Nursing Science (pre-registration) programme at Northumbria University, and on completion of their degree, takes up the post of Registered Nurse.
