Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Nurse Practitioner to extend their knowledge and clinical practice in our Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU), based on Ward 45 at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals.

This part time post is to cover maternity leave and will be a 9 month fixed term contract /secondment from date of commencing post.

The post holder will be pivotal in providing high levels of care to surgical patients referred via emergency pathways, including via the Emergency Department and G.P referrals.

Working independently and autonomously within a multi professional team, the post holder will provide a comprehensive service for the assessment and management of the patients' care, ensuring a smooth and effective emergency pathway. This will include assessment, examination, investigation, diagnosis as well as treatment or referral, and/or discharge of patients presenting to SAU, utilising a full range of nurse practitioner skills.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work with other professionals, for example, surgeons, radiology, nursing staff and community services, to ensure that all patients are managed on an appropriate clinical pathway. It is therefore essential that the postholder demonstrates excellent communication, interpersonal and networking skills.

Competencies in Non-medical prescribing and IRMER are desirable or a willingness to undertaken training. Support will be provided by the surgical team.

  1. Work on the SAU, supporting the surgical on call team and Ward 45 nursing team, to review and manage the care of patients referred on the emergency pathway.
  2. Ensure timely and accurate record keeping.
  3. Communicate with the patients and their families regarding their treatment plans, as appropriate.

  • The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust define a nurse practitioner as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of role is to perform a specific technological procedure/s e.g. endoscopy, ultrasound in a defined patient group and/or advanced patient assessment and clinical decision making in a broad patient group e.g. H@N, pre assessment.
  • To deliver a quality of service matching clinical need to available resources within the focus of specialist nursing practice:
    • To ensure that the patient is the central focus of a streamlined patient journey ensuring optimal quality of care.
    • Working as a nurse practitioner, provide a prompt response to calls from colleagues, prioritising importance and clinical need.
    • Manage own caseload to include assessment, investigation, diagnosis and treatment within defined parameters and training.
    • Provide immediate care management of patient including communication of plan to patients and significant others.
    • Review and refer to appropriate person, e.g. AHP, resident medical staff, specialist registrar or critical care outreach team.
    • Liaising with Patient Services Coordinator where necessary.
    • Communicate within multidisciplinary team, ward/departmental staff and/or out of hours team.
    • Provide specialist education and training to departmental nursing staff, nursing and medical students.
