Job summary

An exciting opportunity to join a dynamic Respiratory Medicine Service in Newcastle upon Tyne has arisen.

As an Advanced Physiotherapist in the Respiratory Medicine Team, you will be responsible for ensuring the service is delivered to the highest standard which includes the Physiotherapy led non-invasive ventilation service.

The patient cohort you will be working with will be diverse and include, but not be limited to: COPD, NMD, ILD, asthma, bronchiectasis, cardiogenic pulmonary complications, bacterial and viral infections.

The Physiotherapy service works closely with the multi-disciplinary team and so you must be an excellent team worker as well as able to work autonomously. The working environment will be a mix between Respiratory Medicine wards including the RSU, Cardiology wards including the CCU as well as the Emergency Department including potential across site working, weekend working and an out of hours on call commitment.

Main duties of the job

As part of the role, you will be support by an Operational Lead as well as a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist within the team, you will work alongside other Advanced Physiotherapists as well as a mix of senior, junior and support staff. You will be expected to demonstrate excellent team leadership as well as clinical capabilities appropriate and in-keeping with the service we provide.

We are looking for innovation and enthusiasm to add to our existing service. As part of this role you will have many development opportunities in keeping with the trusts vast staff investment initiatives.

This is a team lead position and as such will require the successful applicant to share management responsibilities for the respiratory medicine physiotherapy team. This will include but not be limited to:

  • Staff rostering
  • Staff rotation planning
  • Supervision of senior members of the team
  • Regular teaching
  • Staff support
  • Multi-disciplinary working
  • Involvement with quality improvement projects, audits etc.
  • Attendance to relevant departmental meetings

These responsibilities are shared between the advance physiotherapist within the team and supported from the clinical specialist for the team as well as the operation lead for the clinical area.

  • To provide a high standard of physiotherapy care to a highly complex patient group on the acute medical wards, including patients receiving non-invasive ventilation.
  • To provide outpatient physiotherapy support for these patients in clinics and on the day units as applicable to role
  • To provide an advisory service to patients, their families, physiotherapists, consultants, nursing staff and other health care professionals in tertiary and secondary care, both locally and regionally.
  • To develop and provide specialist education and training to nursing, medical and physiotherapy staff and other members of the MDT in order to optimise each patients outcome.
