Royal College of Surgeons Clinical Fellow in advanced laparoscopic/robotic colorectal surgery (Peri-CCT)

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well-integrated team.

This post is available to commence on the 1 Aug 2023 initially for 6 months, extendable to 12 months on satisfactory completion of a probationary period.

Main duties of the job

Clinical:

  • The doctor is expected to assist in the care of all patients to which he/she is allocated under the direct supervision of the consultant. In addition he/she is expected to provide 'cross-cover' for all patients in the Unit when required to do so. Duties include business, post-take and teaching ward rounds, OP clinics, Operating Theatre sessions, and administrative.

Administrative:

  • Each Junior Doctor is expected to carry out all administrative tasks allocated to him/her by the consultants

Research:

  • This Directorate has a strong research pedigree and many ongoing clinical and scientific research projects. The high volume of specialist activity performed in the Directorate ensures there is vast opportunity to instigate and perform research/audit projects. Such activity is encouraged and results presented at regional, national and international meetings

Teaching:

  • The Unit has Stage II and III medical students attached to it. Each Junior Doctor is expected to assist in their teaching together with the teaching and supervision of the Foundation Doctors and in all post-graduate activities of the Unit. The Fellow will have the opportunity to take part in the cadaveric teaching programme at Newcastle Surgical Training Centre, which is under the Directorship of Prof. Horgan.

This Senior Clinical Fellow position in Colorectal Surgery will be based at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, with a potential contribution to emergency surgery at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. The General Surgery Directorate is a busy directorate and the post will give significant experience in laparoscopic and robotic colorectal surgery, robotic abdominal wall and pelvic surgery, TEMS, pelvic floor surgery, extended resections for recurrent / locally advanced rectal cancer and abdominopelvic sarcoma surgery. It would be ideal for a surgeon with significant experience in surgery, particularly towards the end of his/her training looking for further experience prior to obtaining CCT or commencing work as a consultant.

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • Primary Medical Qualification.
  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCS or equivalent.

Desirable

  • Other relevant qualifications (CST, ALS, ATLS, CCrISP).
  • FRCS (Gen Surgery) or equivalent.

Clinical Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • 3 to 5 years' experience at ST or equivalent level within Surgery.
  • Minimum of 1 years' experience of colorectal surgery at ST level.
  • Satisfactory completion of Foundation and Core surgical Training (or equivalent).
  • Evidence of Colorectal Surgery specialty training differentiation

Desirable

  • Evidence of smooth progression through training programmes.

Maintaining Clinical Competence

Essential

  • Written evidence of satisfactory training to date e.g. workplace assessments.

Teaching

Essential

  • Experience of teaching undergraduate medical students & Foundation Doctors.

Desirable

  • Teaching qualification (e.g. Master, Diploma, Certificate of Medical Education).

Clinical Governance, Audit and Research

  • Experience of audit projects.
