Job summary

An opportunity has arisen to join our team of Nuclear Medicine Clinical Technologists based at Darlington Memorial Hospital. You will contribute to the delivery of a comprehensive Nuclear Medicine service delivering approximately 4,000 patient examinations per year in a department which in the middle of an ambitious equipment replacement project which will see installation of new gamma cameras, sample counters, bone densitometers and a new state-of-the-art radiopharmacy suite.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will put patient care at the centre of their work and demonstrate excellent team working skills. Working at other sites within the Department will occasionally be required.

About us

Nuclear Medicine services at Darlington, Durham and Hartlepool are provided by the Northern Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Directorate of Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals. The team of 31 technologists, nurses, clinical scientists, admin staff, radiologists and cardiologists work collaboratively across the three sites, and have a strong history of staff development and training. Opportunities for role development and ongoing training will be available for the right candidate.

Those on a training pathway which would enable them to fully meet the requirements of the post within one year of appointment are welcome to apply. You would be appointed on Annex 21; 75% of the top of Band 6. Once you fully meet the requirements of the post Annex 21 will be removed and you will be paid as a Band 6. Failure to complete this within 1 year from date of appointment may result in your employment with the Trust being reviewed.

The role holder will contribute to delivery of a comprehensive diagnostic nuclear medicine and bone densitometry service for adult and paediatric patients attending for in-vitro and imaging procedures.

Principle duties will include:

  • Preparation, dispensing and assay of radiopharmaceuticals
  • Administration of radiopharmaceuticals by oral, IV and intradermal techniques
  • Following appropriate protocols to provide accurate and timely clinical results for patients undergoing molecular imaging procedures and bone densitometry studies
  • Quality control testing of a wide range of equipment, taking remedial action where required
  • Contributing to patient care, including emergency action in the event of patient deterioration
  • Communicating complicated procedures and concepts to a wide range of people, including patients or relations who may be confused or distressed

  • A good knowledge and understanding of all relevant safety principles, standards and legislation applied to the clinical use of radioactive material & associated physiological measurement equipment e.g. ECG recording.

Desirable

  • Radiopharmaceutical manufacturing and dispensing.
  • Some knowledge of the physics and engineering principles involved in the operation of complex nuclear medicine equipment.
  • Knowledge of bone densitometry (DXA) techniques
  • Knowledge of urodynamics studies.

SKILLS

Essential

  • Patient handling skills of a high order.
  • Numeracy and accuracy of a high order.
  • The ability to work under pressure.

Experience

Essential

  • Substantial Nuclear Medicine experience.

Desirable

  • Practical experience in radiopharmaceutical manufacturing and dispensing.
