The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) will be taking responsibility for providing specialist knowledge, clinical skills and expertise in the treatment and management of Children and Young people with known or suspected allergies that attend the Outpatients or Day Case unit at the Great North Children's Hospital for a variety of diagnostic and investigative procedures, as well as consultation and specialist advice.

Main duties of the job

The Paediatric Immunology and Allergy Department has expanded over the last 15 years and the successful candidate will join an experienced team. The department is rapidly expanding due to increased demand. As a member of the team the children's allergy nurse will see children on the day unit, ambulatory ward, outpatients, and A&E where referrals have been made for management issues of allergy. Alongside this they will help to maintain the smooth running and development of the allergy service.

  • Role responsibilities - Part of their responsibilities will be performing food / drug challenges and immunotherapy. They will work alongside the rest of the team on our clinic days and provide skin prick testing to establish allergies and in ongoing management of our patients. They will provide advice on allergy management to patients, families, and other members of the multidisciplinary team. They will assist the lead nurse in education internally and to primary care. They will assist in departmental research and audit
