Job summary
This is an excellent opportunity to work within the Finance Department of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospital NHS Foundation Trust as an Apprentice Accountancy Assistant, providing valuable experience and offering a strong foundation for a career within the NHS.
You will be enrolled with a local education provider Kaplan and will be required to complete the Association of Accounting Technicians Apprenticeship (AAT), while gaining invaluable finance experience in an NHS environment.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain experience within the Finance Department on rotation, across all areas of the Finance function including
- Financial Services, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Technical Accounts, Cashiers, Capital and Systems Team.
- Financial Management.
- Costing and Income.
- And Research and Development.
The successful candidate will initially start on a Band 2 salary moving to a Band 3 salary within 12 months upon successful completion of the AAT level 3 qualification and necessary experience.

Main duties of the job
This is an excellent opportunity to assist the Finance Department within the Trust. The successful applicant will assist with the timely provision of an efficient high-quality service. The successful applicant will be enrolled within the finance apprentice scheme and required to study towards the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) professional qualification whilst gaining invaluable work experience and support across various departments within the Trusts Finance department
The post holder will ensure: -
- Transactions are entered or paid in a timely manner, ensuring VAT treatment is correct, and discounts taken if applicable
- All work is completed with a high degree of accuracy
- Work is completed to required timescales and deadlines.
- All queries are resolved, often involving verbal and written communication with both internal and external stakeholders to the Trust, demonstrating effective communication skills.
- Commitment to both study and on the job experience.
- Other responsibilities include general administration duties including, post, ordering of supplies and scanning of documents.

Band 2
- Throughout the apprenticeship the post holder will gain experience within the Finance Directorate, including areas such as Financial Services, Financial Management, Research, Costing, Income and Charities.
- The successful candidate will develop the required skills to assist in the day to day operation of the Finance teams ensuring the delivery of a consistently high quality service to the Trust.
- To provide support to Technical and Management Accounts.
- To ensure that all Debtors cash received into the organisation is allocated correctly.
- To actively assist in the recovery of income due to the Trust.
- To assist in compliance with Better Payment Practice and the NHS Cash Management Policy.
- To enter invoices onto the Oracle computer system, both customer and supplier.
- To assist Management Accountants in the production of monthly financial statements to ensure financial controls are maintained within Corporate Governance.
- To assist the Income Team to maintain accurate data to enable the analysis of income and costing.
Band 3
- To assist in the day to day operation of the Financial Services department ensuring the delivery of a consistently high quality service to the Trust.
- To work flexibly as required to meet the needs of the various Financial Services Department teams.
- To assist in the co-ordination and control of activities within Financial Services.
- To ensure that transactions relating to the Trusts activities are processed in a timely manner.
- To work flexibly and actively assist in the collection or payment of monies relating to the Trusts Activities.
- To take immediate action in any remedial adjustments required to ensure the accurate financial recording of the Trusts activities.
