Job summary

We are looking two highly motivated neonatologists to help deliver consultant led care within the neonatal service, based at the RVI in Newcastle. These are newly developed substansive posts which will help the service meet the OOH demands of our patient population and also help support the forthcoming 2nd phase of expansion of the neonatal service.

This is a busy quaternary neonatal service within an expanding regional centre (6800 births annually). The neonatal unit is part of the Northern Region managed clinical network with a population base of 32,000 deliveries annually.

Provide consultant-led care shared with colleagues within the Newcastle Neonatal Service for the clinical areas on Ward 35, the postnatal wards and the Newcastle Birthing Centre at the RVI.

Participate in the neonatal consultant on-call rota for nights and weekends (1 in 11 (Once fully recruited)

Main duties of the job

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well-integrated team.

The successful candidates will be in newly developed posts primarily provided to expand the ability of the service to provide equitable consultant leadership of the service across the week. They will work in the same pattern as, and make a significant contribution to, a well-integrated team providing quaternary neonatal care. The successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop areas of expertise. They will be joining the team at an exciting time where we will have just completed the first phase of a refurbishment of our department and an increase in intensive care capacity from 12 to 16 cots. This is the first part of a planned stepwise expansion and modernisation of the service for local and regional needs over the next 5 years.

In addition to the challenges of the role, we can offer you a commitment to teaching, education, research and audit.

Candidates for the post must be registered medical practitioners and on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee.

Job responsibilities

Clinical:

  • Provide consultant-led care shared with colleagues within the Newcastle Neonatal Service for the clinical areas on Ward 35, the postnatal wards and the Newcastle Birthing Centre at the RVI
  • Participate in the neonatal consultant on-call rota for nights and weekends (1 in 11 (Once fully recruited)
  • Provide advice for and coordinate and where necessary deliver transfers arising from neonatal referrals to Northern Neonatal Transport Service (NNeTS)
  • Provide advice for neonatal issues arising in infants in other areas of Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • Participate in neonatal follow up
  • To undertake clinical duties in such a way that meets with Directorate and Trust aims and objectives
  • Undergo Continued Professional Development (CPD) in accordance with guidelines stipulated by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH)
  • Undertake an annual appraisal and job plan review. It is expected that objectives within job plan reviews will be based on Trust objectives such as fulfilment of fixed contractual commitments on the basis of a 43-week working year with due allowance for statutory holidays

Teaching:
