Ward 8 at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital is the regional centre of expertise for the dynamic and life-changing specialty of vascular surgery. We care for patients from all over the northern region with all forms of circulatory diseases, many of whom present with complex conditions such as:

o Carotid stenosiso Peripheral artery diseaseo Abdominal aneurysmso Ischaemiao Complications due to diabetes and ulcerationso Ongoing complex wound management both at ward level and surgically

This exciting field of surgery is innovative, where we constantly pioneer new treatment techniques, and offer a unique blend of both surgical and medical nursing, which will appeal to confident, self-assured nurses looking for a role which offers high levels of job satisfaction with excellent opportunities for progression.

Wound management including debridement and complex dressing is a major part of the nursing role on Ward 8 and we are passionate about ensuring our nurses can autonomously carry out comprehensive patient assessment, whilst developing advanced clinical skills in a range of competencies; for example vacuum assisted closure (VAC), larvae therapy and compression bandaging.

Main duties of the job

Many vascular diseases have clinical underlying causes and our teams link work closely with many other specialties across our outstanding teaching Trust. We take great pride in having a mutually respectful multi-professional approach here with daily ward rounds involving surgeons, diabetologists and other physicians, podiatrists, clinical nurse specialists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists - having access to such breadth of knowledge and expertise means great exposure to high quality learning opportunities.

Many of our patients are acutely ill and their condition can deteriorate rapidly. They may need physical and emotional support during their treatment journey. As such we seek nurses with keen observation skills, and an aptitude for rapidly assessing a situation, feeling confident to make crucial decisions under pressure. You will also need strong, authentic communication and listening skills, so that patients and their families fully understand their diagnosis and feel assured and supported as to what to expect next.

No two days are ever the same in this fast-paced, complex organisation and the ability to juggle multiple treatment plans with an organised but flexible approach are important skills to help you thrive. Our clinical educators, ward teams and specialist teams provide training, development and support in the delivery of all fundamental nursing care. This includes prevention of harms as well as all of the specific clinical skills required for vascular surgery, such as complex wound dressings, N/G feeds and many others.

We also offer a tailored preceptorship package for all newly qualified staff and our vascular nurse practitioner and clinical educator deliver bespoke study days focusing on competencies. This makes our posts suitable for both newly qualified nurses, as well as those with prior experience.
