INTERVENTIONAL FELLOW IN CTO AND COMPLEX PCI

The post is to commence in September 2022 for 12 months. This post has no on-call commitment.
This 12-month Fellowship in Complex and CTO PCI is suitable for post CCT or final year StR to provide extensive training in chronic total occlusion and complex Percutaneous Coronary Intervention including the use of adjunctive techniques at the Freeman Hospital, one of the largest Interventional Cardiology Centres in the UK. The Fellowship will involve, in addition to the day to day PCI, a training in all CTO techniques and all aspect of complex PCI including Rotational Atherectomy, laser PCI, and Intravascular Imaging under the guidance of Professor Mohaned Egred.

Main duties of the job
The appointee will participate extensively under the supervision of Professor Egred and all the consultant cardiologists in interventional cardiology. The main focus is on complex and CTO PCI and they will gain extensive first operator experience with a particular focus on CTO PCI in addition to the use of adjunctive devices, rotational atherectomy, laser and intravascular imaging.
The appointee will be responsible in the pre- and post-procedural care of patients they have performed procedures upon as well as regularly attend the revascularisation MDTs.
The appointee will be expected to publish and to undertake research projects related to complex and CTO PCI and produce relevant publications. In addition to the possibility of participating in teaching and education.
There are a number of on-going studies within the department, originating both from within and external to the unit and the post will involve taking an active role in contributing to patient recruitment and data collection. It would be expected that the appointee will work to submit data for publication and presentation at national/international conferences.

The Cardiothoracic Centre at Freeman Hospital provides tertiary interventional cardiology services for Tyne and Wear, Northumberland, County Durham and Cumbria, a population of approximately 2.5 million people. Approximately 3000 PCI procedures of which 800 are PPCI interventions and 200 TAVI procedures are undertaken each year. There is a large number of complex PCI including CTO, LMS, rotablation, and Laser PCI which will offer an amble opportunity for training. Interventional facilities include three dedicated state of the art catheter laboratories used for PCI and structural interventions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical:
The successful appointee will work as part of the PCI team. Typical duties per week will include PCI lab sessions, clinic and time allocated for audit and research. There will be responsibility for the management of patients undergoing interventional PCI procedures.
Administrative:
Responsibility for recording data from lab patients in local databases, writing discharge summaries and communicating with General Practitioners.
Other:
Attendance and participation at the weekly revascularisation MDT meeting, other educational meetings and the relevant quality assurance programme. In addition, a research project and output publications.
Emergency and On-call Responsibilities:
There is no out-of-hours commitment attached to this post. It is not expected that the appointee will take part in the General Cardiology specialty registrar on-call rota but it may be possible to accommodate this if the appointee expressly wishes to do so and has suitable experience. This would involve covering CCU including direct admissions to the PPCI service and other cardiac emergencies. This is a 1:10 rota and is resident. It presently attracts a 2B (50%) supplement.
Education and Training:
The named educational supervisor will discuss the needs of the appointee at the start of the job and review them regularly. The appointee will also receive positive support from the Trust with regard to taking exams or additional qualifications, and will have access to a minimum of 10 days of study leave per year, plus additional days for Trust and (if applicable) MTI induction.
Audit and research activities of the department will be an essential part of this post in addition to teaching opportunities at the University of Central Lancashire. The appointee will be involved as a sub-investigator for on-going research studies in interventional cardiology in the department.
Accountability:
The appointee will be accountable in their clinical duties to the consultants whose patients they are managing in the first instance, to the clinical director of cardiothoracic services and ultimately to the medical director of the trust.
Flexibility:
In line with the Trusts core value of placing patients at the heart of everything we do, we are developing our service provision to be responsive to the needs of our patients. To meet those needs some staff groups will be increasingly asked to work a more flexible work pattern so that they can offer services in the evening or weekend. As a result any offer of employment to a consultant post will be subject to you agreeing to work a new more flexible pattern or working in the future if required, including evening and weekend work.
