We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team.

The role will be a full time 7 PA post on the Assessment Suite and the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary as an Acute Medicine Consultant. The successful applicant will join a team providing care to medical patients during the first 24 hours of their admission and managing others as out-patients through SDEC. Applicants should have (or be expected to get within the next 6 months) a CCT in Acute Medicine, or for pre-Acute Medicine specialty commencement, General Internal Medicine with relevant experience. The applicant will need to be to work in a fast-paced environment as part of a multi-disciplinary team. They will be part of an on-call team in order to provide care for our patients across a 7-day service. There will also be an opportunity to practice sub-specialty interest within the job plan.

Main duties of the job

This successful candidate will join the current Acute Medicine consultant team in the day to day running of the Assessment Suite and Same Day Emergency Care. This will involve providing senior clinical decision-making early in patient pathways, supporting junior clinicians and providing consistent 7 day cover across the Acute Medicine department. The role also involves supporting educational activities for the undergraduate and postgraduate trainees within the acute medicine department.

In addition to the challenges of the role, we can offer you a commitment to teaching, education, research and audit.

Candidates for the post must be registered medical practitioners and on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee.

  • Clinical shifts will be split between Assessment Suite (a 50 bed acute medical admissions area) and Same Day Emergency Care (dedicated area proving same day care to around 60 patients a day).
  • Morning shifts entail a ward round of set clinical area (12-21 patients) and afternoon and on-call shifts involve constant review of new patients as they arrive on AS/SDEC as a senior clinical decision maker.
  • Sub-specialty interest work will be supported if practicable by mutual agreement.

Administrative:

  • Clinical administrative work will ensure follow up of scans and results for patients under the care of the acute medical team.
  • Provide senior medical leadership within acute medicine including complaint management, clinical governance and support strategic design of services
  • Engage with Directorate Management team and other Directorates to design new clinical pathways
  • Contribute to departmental morbidity and mortality meetings and regular departmental Consultant meetings

Research:

  • Newcastle hospital is a large tertiary teaching hospital with a vast array of clinical trials. These will at times involve acute medical patients.

Teaching:

  • Time is given within the job plan to support specialty interest relevant to acute medicine unit (eg POCUS, frailty, clinical specialty interest), educational activities for Internal Medicine Trainees, Foundation doctors, and higher speciality trainees or research with defined outputs.
  • The candidate will be expected to supervise a variety of trainees and have the relevant qualifications to support this.
