Job summary

An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Pharmacist with an interest in respiratory medicine to become part of the established Newcastle Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) multidisciplinary team (MDT) ensuring patients across the North East and North Cumbria (NENC) have the correct treatment, at the correct time, which is appropriately prescribed, monitored and adjusted in line with the latest advice and guidance.

We are looking for an experienced prescriber who can work well within a MDT to further expand one of the largest and most comprehensive ILD services in the UK. For someone looking for a future role as a Consultant Pharmacist this could be the ideal role for you.

In addition to offering treatments for IPF, non-IPF forms of ILD are increasingly treated with specialist drugs such as immunosuppressants and antifibrotics, requiring careful counselling and blood monitoring. The Specialist ILD Pharmacist will be key in managing these patients.

It is estimated that over the next 3 years the number of patients receiving antifibrotic medications in the NENC will double and so you will need to be dynamic, and organised to work with the ILD Consultant and CNS team to support these patients.

  • Interview Date: 17th May 2022
  • 37 hours, 30 minutes/week
  • You will be redirected to Trac to apply for the vacancy. Please expand the job details section and read all of the information before applying for the vacancy.

Main duties of the job

Key aspects of this new role include:

  • Networking with other Specialist ILD pharmacists at a national level to develop respiratory pharmacy and sharing of best practice.
  • Initiating (prescribing), assessing, monitoring and supporting patient adherence to ILD therapies.
  • Complete annual reviews of those receiving ILD therapies (with support from the consultant team).
  • During the 1st 12 months in the role ensuring a safe switch to generic Pirfenidone for suitable patients.
  • Work as part of the MDT to ensure all suitable patients with PF-ILD have access to Nintedanib.
  • In reach to acute wards where there are ILD patients to ensure appropriate care and timely discharge.
  • Work closely with the ILD CNS and Consultant team, leading on medicine management issues to allow ILD CNS time to be focussed in other spheres of practice.
  • Liaise with colleagues in primary care for complex cases and shared care arrangements.
  • Education and of other healthcare professionals including through the regional ILD network (led by Newcastle).
  • Engagement with the local ILD patient support groups to improve understanding and knowledge about ILD therapies.
  • Telephone advice and support for patients and support the further expansion of the video consultation service for patients with ILD.
  • Work closely with the specialist palliative care teams embedded within the ILD service.
  • Encourage and contribute to the development of a research culture and environment acting as a specialist resource for respiratory care.
