Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an educator to join Ward 23 at The Children's Heart Unit, Freeman Hospital. This 12 month fixed term post is a unique opportunity to develop skills in clinical education both in an acute ward setting and across the regional network teams.

We are the regional paediatric cardiology unit who provide specialist care for children undergoing complex, routine, day case and emergency cardiothoracic surgery. Our 18-bedded unit incorporates a 6 bedded HDU, and is one of two centres in the UK that provides cardiopulmonary transplantation and the use of ventricular assist devices.

This post also offers an opportunity to collaborate across the North East and North Cumbria network in the delivery of cardiology focused education and training. Working alongside the lead nurse, the educator will provide education to clinical teams in the network in line with the network strategy. The educator will act as a professional resource for regional organisations to provide expert advice concerning professional development of education and practice learning.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be based on ward 23 at the Freeman Hospital. Their role will involve support and delivery of education packages and training with the primary focus being on newly appointed staff during their preceptorship. They will be required to design, implement and evaluate programmes of education within the ward setting, whilst developing collaborative working relationships with clinical educators across the trust.

The role will also provide support to the lead nurse in the North East and North Cumbria network in maintaining and delivering the network education programme. The candidate will be expected to work with teams across the network delivering education and training.

The clinical educator will maintain education databases and ensure monitoring of continuous development of all staff. The training must be in line with trust policy to maintain safe and effective shared and best practice.

We are looking for a registered nurse with vast experience in paediatric cardiology and a passion for clinical teaching. The successful candidate will not only develop and implement education packages, but will also provide transition support for new team members joining the ward. Execution of the preceptorship programme will include ward specific competency training and assessment whilst supporting staff to achieve trust mandatory training.

We are looking for someone highly motivated, flexible, and with experience in teaching and facilitating learning. The candidate should have a good understanding of the holistic needs of new team members, and should demonstrate skills with which to support them. They must also have evidence of on-going professional development, along with excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills.

  • The primary purpose of this role is to support and deliver on-going education, training for nursing and midwifery teams and may be required to support members of the MDT.
  • Identify all opportunities for themselves and others where learning can take place, both formally and informally.
  • Support a Training Needs Analysis and maintain registers of training as appropriate, support ward and departmental sisters/charge nurses to ensure mandatory training is compliant with Trust standard.
  • Makes an active contribute to the Corporate agenda which should be in the region of 40% of the time.
  • Contribute to corporate training and education. Will be asked to support practice development initiatives.
  • Develop appropriate competency based clinical skills education and develop relevant competency assessment documents for approval by the appropriate Trust Committee e.g. Clinical Role Development Group or Nursing and Midwifery Practice Development Group.
  • Support the Trust Governance and Patient Safety agenda through active participation in the work of the Nursing and Midwifery Practice Development Group.
  • To maintain the delivery and quality of services provided within the care environment including the care delivered, supporting nursing standards and acting as a role model working clinically with staff where needed.
