Job summary

As a Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) you will initially attend Northampton University (starting September 2025) for a years course in Low Intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

During your training you will also work within the service delivering interventions with young people in line with your training programme.

As an trainee EMHP you will work in schools as part of a dynamic Mental Health Support Team (MHST) in a creative environment where evidence-based interventions, new ideas, ways of working and supporting children and young people are actively encouraged.

This approach requires flexibility and adaptability, and above all a passion for working with children and young people in educational settings.

Over the course of the training year, the post-holder will, under supervision, develop knowledge and practice skills to employ a range of evidence based interventions for common mental health problems via direct individual and group support for children, young people and their parents, in line with university expectations

Main duties of the job

These posts are full-time, all year round roles. They are paid at a Band 4 on a fixed term contract while training. On successful completion of the course, registration with the required professional body, candidates will be moved to a Band 5.

Interviews will be held in April 2025 and will consist of an assessment process and panel interview.

The TEMHP course will commence in September 2025.Applicants will be asked to demonstrate they are able to start their employment for this role before the course start date.

The TEMHP role will:

  • Work closely alongside a team of mental health professionals delivering a wide range of evidence informed interventions, under supervision.
  • Develop and practice evidence-based skills under supervision to work directly with children, young people and families.
  • Develop and practice evidence-based skills under supervision to carry out holistic and child-centred mental health assessments, including risk assessments.

The TEMHP should ideally:

  • Demonstrate the ability to work at degree level or have an equivalent level of relevant experience, with a proven record of previous learning or formal study in child development, wellbeing or mental health.
  • Have some experience of working with children, young people and families.

You will need to have a full UK driving license and access to a car during working hours, as you will be expected to work across and travel within Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, and to travel to university in Northampton.
