Job summary
Family Liaison Officer role (FLO) will support families and loved ones through the difficult process of an investigation into a death, patient safety investigations following incidents that have occurred within a service provided by the Trust. This will include the day-to-day management of the interaction of the family in the investigation and close liaison with the Investigating Officer to ensure that families are treated appropriately, professionally and with respect for their needs. They will also support investigators to establish and continue family contact if this is required.
The purpose of this role is to provide explanation and support for families through what can be difficult process for them. Whilst compassionate and excellent listening skills will be required the post holder must not assume the role of family counsellor or registered health professional which would be wholly inappropriate. If it is considered the family need further professional support the FLO will provide signposting to other qualified services.
The role will include dealing with, providing compassionate support to newly bereaved and incident affected individuals some of whom will be deeply distressed. The post holder must be self-aware of the impact of this on themselves and must seek and attend professional supervision.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will be responsible for providing comprehensive administration & electronic Trust database records of all contact to support to the Corporate Patient safety Incident Investigators and offer assurances to the Trust executive team and commissioners of LPT services of our commitment to care for families and relatives.
The post holder will be expected to report to and attend relevant meetings to share factual reports, case studies and best practice guidance to enable the Trust to improve its communication and engagement with families. There is also a requirement to organise and teach others best practice and key skills related to having difficult but open and honest conversations and have responsibility for briefing Directorate, Executive and Board members regarding feedback from families and loved ones, including delivering regular reports.
The post-holder will support the Senior Nurses and Clinicians, patient safety colleagues, trust-wide investigators, and directorate colleagues, with the overview and co-ordinating function for leading and developing the Trust approach to supporting families and loved ones post serious incident. As a senior leader in the Trust, the post holder will contribute to the leadership of the patient safety agenda across the organisation.
