Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to set up a new service to support patients who have been infected and/or affected by infected blood.

A new national service has been created in the light of the infected blood inquiry and Leicester will offer a regional service to both Leicestershire and Rutland and Nottingham (although the role will be based solely in Leicester). The role will be supported by a national lead band 9 psychologist, as well as benefit from close links with other regional services.

The successful candidate will work closely with a navigator who will usually be the first point of contact for referrals. The role will involve developing a service which offers comprehensive assessment and treatment (where appropriate) for those impacted by infected blood, as well as liaising with other local services to ensure easy referral onwards where necessary. Where capacity allows the psychologist can also become supported involved in working in local haematology services (joining a small, already established team of psychologists).

The candidate will also join the medical psychology department, which is well established and continuously growing team This team includes clinical psychologists, trainees, assistants and excellent admin/clerical support. We place great emphasis on supervision and personal development, which is possible through working within a team of psychologists with a range of areas of expertise.

Main duties of the job

The role will involve developing a new service for people infected and affected by infected blood. The successful applicant will have the support of the NHSE guidelines, the national lead and the other regional services in developing the service. this will initially involve setting up patient pathways (in liaison with regional navigator) and referral guideline. It will be important to liaise with other local services, to ensure smooth referral onwards for patients as well as to have a good understanding of the infected blood inquiry to understand what people are likely to have experienced.

The role will also include assessments and interventions to support appropriate referrals. Should referrals take some time to start coming through the psychologist will support the pre-existing psychology team in haematology. This includes attendance at MDTs, staff training and setting yup reflective practice spaces and complex case discussions, as well as assessment and intervention work.
