Job summary

This is an excellent opportunity to join our experienced and successful team supporting improvement across the NHS. We are seeking an ambitious and highly motivated Data Analyst with an understanding of the NHS and internal audit.

The post holder will fulfil an important role supporting data analytics in the context of audit and assurance services. This will include the analysis and interpretation of large data sets and developing new innovative products. The post holder should be able to demonstrate experience and understanding of a wide variety of analytical and statistical methods and have experience of SQL querying and/or programming to interrogate and analyse complex healthcare data.

Main duties of the job

As Data Analyst you will be required to:

plan, perform and support colleagues to perform data analysis across all clients and covering a wide range of systems.

conduct data analysis with minimal supervision, using appropriate technology and techniques to analyse large data sets and to interpret the results.

have advanced knowledge and experience of using Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel) as well as other IT systems, including but not restricted to MS Access, Arbutus and PowerBI/Tableau (relevant to the specialist area).

have experience of programming/writing queries (Python, R, SQL) to extract data, analyse information and produce professional audit and other benchmarking / comparative reports.

lead a project to develop the automation of data extraction of client systems and transactions to allow continuous monitoring and reporting.

produce accurate and evidenced based reports and dashboards, which simplify the data and highlight relevant trends and forecasts.

lead meetings, with minimal support from their Supervisor / Client Audit Manager, to explain the results of data analysis reports / dashboards.

supervise and assist in the development of data analytics staff.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Qualified in relevant CCAB/IIA/IRM professional qualification or equivalent knowledge and experience acquired through in-depth experience of data analysis.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, preferably relevant to Mathematics, Statistics, Economics or analytical discipline.
  • GCSE qualification (or equivalent) must include English Language / Literature & Mathematics grade C or above.

Knowledge and skills

Essential

  • Experience of designing and maintaining complex queries including interpretation of data and reporting using an appropriate variety of charts/ graphical techniques.
  • Experience of reviewing large data sets identifying key messages and presenting findings from complex analysis to senior management within the client organisation with little or no supervision.
  • Experience of having used data analysis effectively including identification of poor performance concerns and/ or us of data to identify efficiencies and scope for improvement in processes systems and services.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at different levels within an organisation both orally and in writing. This must include the ability to write effective reports.
  • Advanced IT skills particularly use of Microsoft Office (Word Excel and PowerPoint). This will include the ability to accurately input data to spreadsheets and databases as well as the ability to effectively analyse interpret and evaluate information.

Desirable

  • Internal audit compliance and/ or assurance function experience with the NHS.
  • Understanding of the service users of the Trust (which could include lived experience of conditions the Trust deals with or of receiving services relevant to those the Trust provides).

Experience

  • Data analysis skills including advanced knowledge of Excel and preferably use of MS Access or equivalent database systems as well as other IT systems including but not restricted to Arbutus and PowerBI/Tableau. Knowledge of macros and programming/writing queries (Python / R / SQL) necessary to support effective data analysis.

  • Working knowledge of the internal process as well as application of systems-based and risk-based auditing processes.
  • Understanding of how the Internal Audit process sits within an organisations governance arrangements as well as within the wider NHS.
  • Knowledge of the NHS Data Manual Information Standards and Performance Indicators used throughout the NHS.
