Job summary

*Band 8b- Subject to banding* A £2000 recruitment premium will be awarded to the successful candidate. Due to an expansion to our Adult Autism Assessment Service (AAAS), we are looking for a highly motivated, passionate Clinical/Forensic/Counselling Psychologist who has a keen interest in the diagnosis of adults who are autistic. You will join our existing small but dynamic team of professionals who are passionate about providing high-quality service. As the Highly Specialised Psychologist you will have significant experience in the diagnosis & provision of post diagnostic interventions of adults who are autistic. You will act as the clinical psychology lead for AAAS & will be responsible for carrying out highly specialised complex assessments providing a service to adults 18 & over who are registered with a Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland GP. You will exercise full responsibility & autonomy for the assessment, treatment and discharge of adults referred to AAAS where the presenting difficulties & concerns can be managed as a psychologically based intervention. You will provide highly specialised professional knowledge, advice & support to other agencies, including regular supervision to the staff within Bernardos who lead our local Dynamic Support Register for Children and Young People, & to members of the multi-disciplinary team on related topics & support recently diagnosed autistic adults in offering post-diagnostic support.

Main duties of the job

To ensure the systematic provision of a highly specialized clinical multi-disciplinary service to clients referred into the AAAS suspected of having autism, including: • Undertaking both structured and semi structured autism diagnostic assessments for patients with significantly complex needs, often with possible differential diagnosis of other neurological conditions such as ADHD and/or mental health problems. • Making highly specialized diagnostic recommendation based on judgment involving complex, often conflicting factors, requiring analysis and interpretation. • The provision of comprehensive strengths based diagnostic reports and feedback to the patient and proxy. • To be responsible for planning and implementing a range of psychologically based post diagnostic psychosocial interventions which meets the complex needs of the population served and that of the service. • To provide highly specialist assessments, including cognitive assessments, to help understand underlying difficulties which may be impacting on a person. • To ensure the incorporation of psychological frameworks for the understanding and provision of high-quality care for adults with autism. • Identify and lead opportunities for quality improvements and service optimization. • To undertake research and development activities.

Essential

  • BPS accredited honours degree in Psychology.
  • A Doctorate in Clinical/forensic/counselling Psychology accredited by the BPS and HCPC (or equivalent).
  • Additional specialist training related to working with adults with Autism and their families and carers.
  • Registered member of HCPC.
  • Eligible for chartered status as a clinical/forensic/counselling psychologist.

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive post-qualification experience of working as a specialist clinical/forensic/counselling psychologist with autistic adults and other neurodevelopmental conditions and their carers and families where there are psychological concerns.
  • Extensive post qualification experience of providing specialist clinical psychology assessments of people in the context of a variety of living situations which may include : supported or residential living , inpatient or high dependency units, private hospitals, families , shared lives.
  • Extensive specialist clinical psychology assessment skills which include: Use of psychometric assessments of intelligence, memory, reading, social functioning; executive functioning;use of behavioural assessments; use of observational methods of assessment, assessment by interviewing, assessment by analysis of archive material.
  • Extensive supervisory and consultative experience to other psychologists; to other professions; to other agencies

Knowledge and skills

  • A high level of interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to contribute to policy and service development forums and propose service changes and developments.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development as dictated by the HCPC .
