Job summary

We are looking for a suitable Occupational Technical Instructor to join our service. We provide an Occupational Therapy & Physiotherapy service to our Older People's mental health wards in Bury. We work with older people with a range of complex mental health conditions. The philosophy of the role is based on the principles of the Model of Human Occupation

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity for a Technical Instructor to join our Older People's Service in Tameside. The role of Technical Instructor is to work alongside the Occupational Therapist & Physiotherapist and to carry out either individually or group activities, which will be aimed at enabling individuals to become more independent, confident and able to cope with problems they encounter because of their mental health problems.

Job responsibilities

Ward & home based assessments: supporting assessments as required with qualified OT

Living skills: e.g. meal planning, cooking, budgeting, health education.

Social skills: e.g. discussion groups, communication groups, orientation to the community, Life Story work

Creative therapies: e.g. art, craft, music, creative movement

Education: information, technology, literacy, numeracy

Cognitive skills: e.g. use of specific activity to develop concentration, memory cognition, problem solving sequencing and occupational competence.

Recreation/leisure activities: promoting the use of community resources, hobbies/interests, gardening, voluntary work skills.

Health and fitness activities: sport and fitness activities, indoor and outdoor, both on the unit and in the community.

To participate in the OT specific professional groups as appropriate and both clinical and professional meetings as directed by the OT/Team Manager or OT lead.

To meet with registered OT each week for referral allocation and management under the terms of the agreed OT framework within the team.

To report effectively both verbally and in writing to the occupational therapist, physiotherapist and multi-disciplinary teams (MDT) on the clients performance and progress as per their individual care plans.

To liaise with external agencies as required.

  • Technical qualifications, e.g. City & Guilds, or NVQ3 in Health & Social Care or equivalent technical / life skills gained through work or personal experience.

Experience

Knowledge

Essential

  • Interest and the ability to learn, practice and apply the role of Occupational Therapy TI with clients with mental health needs.
