Job summary

  • The ideal candidate should be enthusiastic and flexible in approach and must hold a diploma or degree in Occupational Therapy and be registered with the HCPC
  • You should have a knowledge of MOHO and its' assessment tools and possess a good understanding of the occupational context of acute care and its application to assessment and treatment
  • You will have a good understanding of Mental Illness.
  • You must have some evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and a sound understanding of current government policies in relation to Acute Care including National Guidance, Mental Health Act, Risk Assessment, Risk Management processes and CPA processes and a good working knowledge of assessment, care planning, implementation and evaluation processes.

Main duties of the job

  • To undertake Occupational Therapy assessments.
  • Plan and implement individual and/or group interventions using selected and graded activity to develop the patients' skills in identified areas of deficit.
  • Ensure intervention is provided in a range of settings suitable to meet the needs of clients.
  • Ensure ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the Occupational Therapy process in line with sound evidence based practice.
  • Provide advice on issues related to activities of daily living for other professionals and carers.
  • Participate in the organisation and provision of other appropriate therapeutic activities.
  • Work closely with OT colleagues from other clinical settings/teams providing peer group support.
  • Responsibility for the fieldwork education of designated students.
  • Participation in regular supervision with a Senior OT and peer supervision.

About us

Davenport ward is a 20-beded functional female ward for older people. We provide assessments and treatment for people experiencing mental health problems, such as, schizophrenia Bipolar, Psychosis, dementia, depression and anxiety.

Patients may be admitted to the ward voluntarily or detained under the Mental Health Act. This may come through consultant psychiatrists, the older people's community mental health team, mental health liaison team or A&E.

We work to actively promote independence, whilst undertaking a comprehensive assessment of mental and physical health needs.

Our team includes mental health nurses, doctors, healthcare support workers and pharmacists, physiotherapist, activity coordinator and technical instructor. We also work with other health professionals, such as speech and language therapists and dietitians.

During the admission, we work with patients and carers to develop a discharge plan, ensuring that appropriate services are in place upon discharge. We develop this with community psychiatric nurses, social workers and other care providers.

Job responsibilities

  • To provide and develop occupational therapy interventions on the ward and other clinical areas as negotiated with the therapy manager and ward manager.
  • To deliver individual and group interventions.
  • To be responsible for the provision of specialized intervention using evidence based/client centered principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions
