Job summary

The post holder is responsible for the assessment of patient care needs and development, devising, implementing and evaluating programmes of care, both for a specific group of patients as the named care provider and in supporting the care of all patients. As a Alcohol Liaison Nurse Practitioner you will provide specialist advice and support in treating alcohol dependency to the acute trust staff, patients and family members.The post holder will be expected to provide clinical expertise and knowledge, demonstrating a sound understanding of the issues related to the identification, assessment, treatment, and management of the client group: alcohol users, this includes those with increasingalcohol risk, those who are experiencing alcohol harm as well as those who are dependent.

Main duties of the job

Work as part of the multi-disciplinary Mental Health Liaison team to deliver aneffective and efficient response to referrals from the acute trust for personspresenting with alcohol related difficulties, providing clinical assessments andinterventions focussing on relapse prevention, early discharge and improved qualityof life for patients referred.o Provide a service to the wards within the general hospital, assessing individuals whohave alcohol dependence difficulties and may also have a range of complex physicaland mental health needs. This would include both functional and organic illnesses oflater life in addition to younger peopleo Develop and provide training and support to acute hospital staff regardingrecognising alcohol dependence conditions and appropriate management andonward referral pathwayso Provide information and clinical support to police and ambulance staff in order to helpthem make appropriate pathway decisions

  • Experience of working in mental health settings Experience of working with individuals in distress Experience of working with non pharmalogical approaches to managing challenging behaviours with people with dementia Experience of modelling behaviours to new staff members Experience of working with people with physical ill health issues and disabilities
  • Basic understanding of mental health issues including dementia. Understanding of confidentiality and data protection issues. Consent issues Privacy and dignity issues
  • Ability to listen effectively Ability to follow a plan of care and recognise the boundaries of own role Good written and verbal communication skills Ability to create innovative solutions to help empower service users. Ability to work without direct supervision in a range of settings. Ability to form positive therapeutic relationships with service users and carers. Ability to acknowledge diversity and promote anti-discriminatory practice/equal opportunities. Ability to provide practical support with daily living activities. An ability to act calmly in emergencies and to respond in a professional manner to stressful and challenging behaviour.
